English Explained

Why ‘decisive action’ sounds better than ‘significant action’?
It’s all about collocations — words that naturally go together.

In the poll about:
The government must take _______ action to address the growing housing crisis.

💯 the BEST answer was DECISIVE action.

WHY?
✅ Decisive action is a strong, natural collocation in formal and academic English.
It means action that is clear, firm, and aimed at resolving the issue.

🤔 What about ‘SIGNIFICANT’?

Significant action is also a collocation, but less common in this kind of context.

It means important action, but without the same sense of urgency or resolution.

😵‍💫 And the others?
Aggressive action — fine in some contexts (e.g. “aggressive marketing”) but too hostile for neutral policy language.
Dramatic action — more theatrical or emotional than effective.

🤯 Other natural collocations with ‘action’:
--> take immediate action
--> take urgent action
--> take bold action
--> take firm/decisive action ✅

Collocations matter — they make your English sound natural and precise

An oft-repeated question: What should you watch to improve your listening, speaking skills, and vocabulary in general?

My go-to: Interviews!
I prefer interviews over speeches because speeches can feel a bit formal and unnatural. Interviews, on the other hand, are like real conversations – two people naturally talking. They’re a goldmine for learning sentence starters, idiomatic expressions, and natural intonation.

Here’s a video I’ve recommended to many students: https://youtu.be/41i2MgvSrcY?si=QFHIm...
