if clutter keeps magically appearing and you have ADHD… this might be why.

this catch all basket is one of my favorite ADHD organization hacks for executive dysfunction 🫶🏻

sometimes your brain doesn’t need more discipline.

it needs an easier default. #adhdhacks #adhdorganization #executivedysfunction #neurodivergenttips #adhdhelp

If shame actually improved executive functioning, it would’ve worked by now 🤔

I promise you do not need more self criticism.

You probably need support that actually works with your brain.

Beating yourself up will never be a sustainable productivity hack!

If this is something you’re still unlearning too, stick around because we’re building better ways to work with neurodivergent brains over here ✨✨

turns out reducing shame has been a WAY more effective motivator for me than bullying myself ever was 😭

my brain responds so much better to:
“how do i support myself through this?”
instead of:
“why can’t i just do things normally?”

turns out shame was not actually a sustainable productivity strategy 💀

some lions chase people through forests.

some chase people through their own thoughts.

not everybody’s lions look the same.

a person's nervous system may have been taught to:

• fear abandonment
• fear failure
• fear being visible
• monitor how "acceptable" they seemed just to stay safe
• blend in because being different could change how the world treated them

the nervous system adapts to the dangers it experiences most often.

which means different lived experiences create different lions.

Once upon a time, our lions had teeth 🦁

Now some of them sound like:
• overthinking
• burnout
• guilt when you rest
• perfectionism
• panic during silence
• never feeling fully safe
• constantly needing to stay productive

The human nervous system still reacts to emotional danger like survival is not guaranteed 👀

This is because for a very long time, it wasn’t!

• rejection could mean losing community
• failure could mean losing shelter
• being misunderstood could mean losing protection
• conflict could mean violence
• being different could make you a target

Our bodies learned to survive before they learned to rest.

Some lions are physical.
Some are emotional.
Some disguise themselves as personality traits.

And some are only visible to their prey 🐇

there comes a point in the healing journey where you realize your body still reacts to situations your current self has already survived.

ex:
someone saying “we need to talk” and your nervous system immediately preparing for the worst 🥲

because for a lot of people, little shifts in mood or tone actually DID used to mean something.

and even after your life changes, your body doesn’t always catch up right away.

dare i say… “the body keeps the score” ? 😭🫶🏻

if your nervous system reacts strongly to small things sometimes, try not to immediately shame yourself for it.

a lot of bodies learned survival before they learned safety.

something that helps me sometimes is pausing before i react and doing a quick little self scan:

what emotion am i actually feeling right now?
what specifically triggered it?
does this situation match the intensity my body is reacting with?
have i felt this way before in situations that WERE bigger or more unpredictable?

then usually:

deep breath.
drink water.
walk around for a second.
let my nervous system calm down before deciding the world is ending 😭

sometimes your body is reacting to the present.
sometimes it’s reacting to history.

and learning the difference takes practice.

Before surgery I planned like my future self would have ZERO capacity

Not “I’ll try my best”
Zero

So I:
• made food simple
• moved things closer
• reduced decisions
• set up my space to require less effort

If you’re neurodivergent, this matters more than motivation

Have you ever set things up like this ahead of time?

And if you’re neurodivergent… this hits DIFFERENT

Because a lot of us got really good at
pushing through
ignoring signals
and calling it “functioning”

So your brain is like
“we can still do a little more :)”

And your body is like
girl. no.

And now you’re stuck there like
???

because the strategy that always worked
suddenly doesn’t

That disconnect is exhausting

Have you ever had your body just shut it down like that?

I used to think pushing through everything meant I was strong

Now I think it just meant I didn’t feel safe slowing down

A lot of us learned to function by overriding our bodies

especially with ADHD or high-stress environments

But that strategy eventually stops working

Not because you’re weak

But because your system is trying to change

Have you ever hit that point where “pushing through” stopped working?
