A few days ago, I ran a viewer survey for what kinds of videos people would like to see. Someone asked if I was going to make a video about the results, and while I hadn't originally planned to, I guess it could be interesting? Let me know what you think:
It's been a busy few days - since posting my last video, Vanilla has had a big influx of testers, bug reports, and feature requests that I've been working my way through - but I wanted to take a moment to say thanks to all of you guys for watching and supporting what I do.
This year we actually hit two pretty big milestones: not only did the channel reach a whopping 500,000 subscribers, this year also marks the 10-year anniversary of me creating this channel (on October 27, 2015). Huge thanks to everyone who's here and has stuck around all of these years; I wish I had been organized enough to do something special to mark these occasions, but hopefully the release of the first Vanilla/Wii U video (finally) was a good enough concession.
I know the channel has been a little unpredictable for the past few years. To be honest, it's been a challenge finding the right balance between doing cool projects that are fun to watch (and hopefully provide some use or value to the retro community I love so much), while also making high-quality videos that I'm proud to put out. I'm a perfectionist, so my natural inclination is to spend a lot of time getting everything "just right" before it goes out, but that doesn't necessarily make for a very successful YouTube channel.
Going into 2026, I have big plans to ramp up video production, and my biggest hope is that at some point I'll be able to hire a full-time editor/videographer, and that we can not only get more videos out, but keep the quality and consistency up too. I experimented a lot this year with getting outside help for videos - some of which turned out great, some not-so-great - but I've learned a lot and feel very optimistic about the videos I've got in the pipeline. I hope you enjoy them too!
Thanks for all of the kind words on the new documentary! It really has meant a lot to see people enjoying something that I put so much time and energy into.
Sadly, due to copyright issues, the video is completely unmonetizable.
I'll be okay, but it does hurt a little getting nothing from over six months of work. If you're willing to join my Patreon or YouTube Members to support me and help me make more longform projects like it in the future, I'd hugely appreciate it! I also upload exclusive Patreon/Member videos at least once per month so you'll get some extra content too.
🔴 THE MAKING OF LEGO ISLAND: A DOCUMENTARY - Out now on Patreon and YouTube Members 🔴
I'm not beating the "LEGO Island guy" allegations with this one, am I...
For the last three years, I've been collecting interviews and footage to make something like this, but only around July 2024 did I feel like I had enough to actually put it together, so this is what I've been working on for the past 5-6 months (minus streams, MattKC Bytes, and Patreon exclusives). It is, as far as I can tell, the most comprehensive retelling of the creation of LEGO Island, all from the perspectives of the people who made it.
Just note, this is NOT related to the decompilation, nor does it really have anything to do with programming. There will be a video about the decompilation in the near future, I promise!
Hi! Just letting everyone know I re-enabled channel memberships on YouTube, so if people prefer to support through here rather than Patreon, I've made all of the Wii U development vlogs available and will post updates to both from now on!
Thanks for your patience and stay tuned for more soon!
Do you care about video games? Do you think corporations should be allowed to arbitrarily decide when you're no longer allowed to play games you legally purchased?
We live in a world where that's increasingly becoming the rule rather than the exception. If you appreciate retro gaming today (and if you watch my videos, chances are you do), there's a pretty good chance in the future there won't be any retro gaming to appreciate. But right now, we have a chance to do something about it.
