Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) - Guillaume Tell: On the Wings of Freedom
The evocative yet virtuosic overture to Guillaume Tell, Rossini’s final opera, is rightly renowned and beloved.
Its pastoral opening and subsequent storm scene inspired numerous imitations and reflect the emerging sense of nature characteristic of the early 19th century.
The lively second part, by contrast, is quintessential Rossini: with simple melodic and rhythmic means, he achieves compelling effects without ever becoming trivial.
