NAMA 105, 106, 107 & 108 of BHAIRAVA ASHTOTTARNAMA (108 Names of Bhairava)

NAMA 105

ॐ वशिने नमः

oṃ vaśine namaḥ

Meaning:

Salutations to the One who holds absolute authority and power over all of existence.

Remarks:

"The name Vaśin derives from the Sanskrit root √वश् (vaś), meaning “to control, to govern, to bring under influence.”

While it denotes “the all-powerful Lord,” in the context of Bhairava, this power is synonymous with svātantrya—an absolute, self-governing freedom that requires no external cause to exist or to create.

Unlike a passive or static observer, Bhairava is Vimarśa-śakti personified: a dynamically self-aware consciousness that manifests the entire universe out of His own sovereign will.

The cosmos is not a separate creation that He manages, but a joyful and spontaneous expression of His own infinite being."

NAMA 106

ॐ सर्वसिद्धिप्रदाय नमः

oṃ sarvasiddhipradāya namaḥ

Meaning:

Salutations to the One from whom all Siddhis arise.

Remarks:

"The name Sarvasiddhiprada is formed from sarva (all), siddhi (attainment), and prada (giver).

Thus, it means that Bhairava is the bestower of all possible attainments or siddhis. It also suggests that He is the very ground in which all fulfillment originates and finds completion.

Siddhi spans everything from worldly achievement and the acquisition of supernatural powers to mastery over the senses and the highest states of spiritual liberation.

For the upāsaka, Bhairava’s role is foundational. Without His grace, it is nearly impossible to reach the higher registers of Śakti-upāsanā.

He acts as the one who prepares the mind and body for higher spiritual experience—the one who clears inner and outer obstacles, making the “soil” fertile."

NAMA 107

ॐ वैद्याय नमः

oṃ vaidyāya namaḥ

Meaning:

Salutations to the Divine Physician - Healer.

Remarks:

"In His Vedic resonance as Rudra, Bhairava embodies a divine paradox—holding the bow and arrows that cause affliction while simultaneously carrying the healing herbs (oṣadhi) that cure it.

Ancient iconography often portrays Śiva holding a small medicine vessel and bearing a thousand remedies, including the mysterious jalāśa, a cooling “water of life” that soothes the heat of fever and distress.

As the ultimate Vaidya (physician-healer), Bhairava possesses the Sañjīvanī-vidyā, the secret knowledge of resuscitation. By swallowing the Kālakūṭa (world-poison) to protect the universe, He demonstrated absolute mastery over toxins and the power to reverse death itself.

He is the one who imparted this knowledge to figures such as Kāvya Uśanas, ensuring that the science of healing and the restoration of life remained available to the world."

NAMA 108

ॐ प्रभविष्णवे नमः

oṃ prabhaviṣṇave namaḥ

Meaning:

Salutations to the The One who is the source of the power that manifests all existence.

Remarks:

"Prabhaviṣṇu is derived from pra + √bhū (“to arise forth, to come into powerful being”), indicating that Bhairava is not merely a deity who holds power, but the very source from which all existence flows.

This name suggests that the manifestation of the universe is Bhairava’s natural and habitual state. He does not struggle to create or command; rather, the entire world is a spontaneous expression of His inherent nature.

One may think of Bhairava as the primordial surge—the fountainhead from which every force, life form, and event arises. Through the energy of Śakti, He is the ever-unfolding “Becoming” that continuously brings reality into being and sustains it.”
