Body positivity and acceptance is a journey and we’re all on it. No two paths are the same. So don’t compare! And don’t be too hard on yourself. Nobody loves their body 100%.
It’s about learning new behaviors, like focusing your energy into thinking of things you like about yourself and your body. Behaviors like looking in the mirror every day to say to yourself that you’re beautiful no matter what. Behaviors like complimenting yourself for looking nice or feeling great! Then baby stepping it from there.
It’s time people in marginalized bodies, particularly plus size and disabled bodies, understand that nothing is wrong with them. Let’s normalize all types of bodies. All bodies are positive bodies, regardless of how society and pop culture view shape, size and appearance.
Every life story I’ve heard from a mother resonates resilience… STRENGTH!
I’ve heard about the difficult situations they’ve endured and conquered as women… as mothers. I’ve heard about the sacrifices they have made, quietly, while nobody was looking. I’ve heard about the toll growing these babies took on them, physically & mentally, but still they hold their heads high. I’ve heard about the pressure the world puts on them to act like none of this happened.
Their stories are my story… Stories of strength, love, sacrifice, building empires, raising the future generation, leading our generation and giving themselves entirely.
I’m here to applaud these women and to remind them to guard their minds, care for their bodies and embrace their super power.
All the titles on the books in this picture are a few, actual questions I have been asked throughout my career, even at my peak.
Questions that made me think to myself, ‘am I not enough?’ Questions that got to me, so much so that I tried to fit into moulds that boxed me into the system. Forced me to be ‘normal and acceptable’.
Well, I have learned that the definition of a successful woman isn’t linear. Why fit in when you were born to stand out. You have the power to break societal moulds! To make NEW moulds for yourself and support those that come after you. You can achieve anything and everything you set your heart to by being yourself. Authenticity is what makes YOU.
Growing up, our dolls were white, relaxed hair was sworn superior, majority of women on local billboards and in advertising were light skinned, mixed-race or ‘racially ambiguous.’
As a young girl, I did not think that this kind of exposure would have any effect on my self-image, but it did. Until one day I asked myself why my dark skinned male peers were considered handsome, attractive, while females of the same complexion were labeled average, never hot; a second choice to the lighter skinned counterpart.
Women of darker skin tone have been placed on the back burner when it comes to representation and the same has been for Africa. But a new day is on the horizon. We are slowly but surely, one day eventually, coming to an understanding that what is seen as beautiful is purely a matter of CONDITIONING, not preference.
The media plays a critical role in defining society’s perception of beauty. I am here to say that dark skinned women are also beautiful. We are leading ladies in (Kenyan) films (hi please), we are the beautiful wife depicted on billboards with children whose skin colour matches our own (I mean LOL), we are the face of prime-time news and magazine covers, we are hot, we are desirable, we are pretty, we are cute, we are smart, we are first-choice and we are here. Dark is Divine. Dark is beautiful 🖤. @jules_her .
