The American sloop USS Peacock, led by Lewis Warrington, fought the British brig HMS Epervier off the coast of Cape Canaveral, 1814. Peacock won a fierce forty-five-minute duel with minimal losses, earning Warrington a Congressional gold medal. Showing that American naval gunnery was superior.
