My thoughts and deepest condolences to the victims and their loved ones affected by the Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong.
As you might have seen on the news, the fire broke out at 2:51 pm on 26th November, igniting the green scaffolding mesh and quickly engulfing seven residential blocks in the estate. As of 29th November, there were 128 people who lost their lives, including a firefighter, becoming the most fatal fire accident in the city since 1948.
In the midst of this profound sadness, what is truly touching is the way our community respond. From the incredible bravery of firefighters to citizens volunteering to donate supplies, it is in these difficult times that we see the resilient spirit of Hong Kong 🇭🇰.
The fire has also raised social issues, in particular accelerated government plans to completely replace traditional bamboo scaffolding with metal alternatives. Bamboo scaffolding is more than just a construction method; it is a cultural symbol of Hong Kong's skyline. We must learn from the lesson of our vanishing neon lights, once a defining feature of our city, now largely lost due to stringent signboard regulations, and actively protect our cultural heritage before it disappears forever.
