Nigerian-born engineer pleads guilty to wire fraud in US after steering $1.67m meant for repair of decrepit buildings to himself and family members
A 57-year-old Nigerian-born engineer has admitted steering $1.64 million meant for the repair of decrepit buildings in St. Louis, Missouri, United States to himself and relatives.
Adebanjo “Banjo” Popoola, a former building inspector with the City of St. Louis, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to three counts of wire fraud.
Popoola was a building division inspector with the City of St. Louis at the time and was responsible for managing important aspects of two programs designed to aid in the stabilizing and rehabilitating of city properties, Stable Communities STL and Prop NS. Stable Communities STL was funded through federal American Rescue Plan Act funds and intended for privately-owned properties.
Prop NS was intended for residential properties owned by the City’s Land Reutilization Authority (LRA) and was funded through City issued general obligation bonds.
Popoola was primarily responsible for identifying properties for rehab or stabilization; developing the scope of work; seeking, reviewing and awarding bids; inspecting the work that had purportedly been completed on each property and then certifying that the work had been completed so funds could be disbursed to the contractors.
On Tuesday, he admitted having his sister, a Texas resident who had never visited St. Louis, incorporate Farst Construction LLC, in Missouri in October of 2022.
His future wife set up a different company in February of 2021, Premier Finish Contractors LL
Six Nigerians Return Home After Nearly One Year in Detention in Côte d’Ivoire
Six Nigerian nationals have returned home after spending nearly one year in detention in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, without being formally charged or tried, in what has been described as an emotional reunion with their families.
The development was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who said the young men had travelled to Côte d’Ivoire on a trading mission before becoming entangled in circumstances that led to their prolonged detention.
The returnees were identified as Aliyu Malami, Sa’adu Bello, Nasiru Umar, Shamsu Abubakar, Lyman Mohammed, and another member of the group.
According to the Minister, the experience serves as a sobering reminder that many people in detention abroad are not always afforded due process and may become victims of unfamiliar legal systems without fully understanding their rights or the circumstances surrounding their detention.
She noted that although the young men have regained their freedom and returned to Nigeria, they continue to bear the emotional scars of their ordeal.
The Minister also paid tribute to Usama Murtala, a member of the group who reportedly fell ill during the period of detention and died shortly after the others regained their freedom.
Describing the incident as a painful loss, she said his death would remain a lifelong burden for those who survived the ordeal.
Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protecting the welfare and rights of Nigerians living abroad, in line with the Federal Government’s Citizen Diplomacy policy under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
She commended the Nigerian Mission in Abidjan for its efforts in securing the release of the detainees and also appreciated the support of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) for receiving the returnees on arrival.
The Minister equally expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising the welfare and protection of Nigerian citizens abroad as a key component of the country’s foreign policy.
Welcoming the young men home, she remarked, “There is no place like home,” while wishing them healing and a fresh start after their difficult experience.
“The Presidency can only refer Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as the other individual, to the ICPC because allegations of fraud and corruption have been raised.” “The government will have to explain to Nigerians how a whopping sum of N24bn was budgeted for an unknown agency, as well as how that agency had accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
