How I Fought a New York Speeding Ticket (VTL §1180(b)) Pro Se Using AI and Got a Full Dismissal

Hey everyone. I want to share something that happened to me, how I handled it, and what I learned from the experience.

About a month and a half ago, I was accused of speeding way faster than I believe I was actually going. Specifically, I was charged under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law §1180(b), a speeding charge serious enough that I couldn't risk an expensive ticket or my insurance premiums spiking. I was also confident the state trooper was wrong in how my speed was clocked on radar.

So I decided to fight the ticket. And in the end, I got a full dismissal.

Based on my research, only a small percentage of drivers ever fight traffic tickets at all. An even smaller percentage represent themselves as pro se defendants. Full dismissals, especially for serious speeding charges, are rare, and the number of people who use AI as part of their legal strategy is likely a tiny fraction of that already small group.

I've decided to document the entire journey. What I went through, how I approached the problem, and what it took emotionally. I'll talk about how I used AI to write my discovery letter and my motion to dismiss, how I used AI to analyze what the ADA was trying to do procedurally, and how I used AI to help me understand and navigate the legal system step by step.

As someone who doesn't have a college degree and who only had a surface level understanding of the legal system, I spent over 40 hours learning everything I could about New York State traffic law as it relates to speeding tickets. That effort paid off.

I'll be sharing this story, my reflections, and what I learned on my personal blog at zeerebel.com and on my YouTube channel. If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to follow along and subscribe.

Throwback training video
Almost 15 years ago I uploaded this clip to YouTube, a piece of history Muhammad gave me when he went back to Iran to train with his friends. Shot in 2000, in a simple community center.

Muhammad's backstory is incredible. He was a former Iranian junior silver medalist and army wrestling champion who started wrestling at 8. When he moved to Canada in his late 20s, there was no adult wrestling scene, so he switched to Judo and earned his black belt in just 2 years. Ten years later, I was lucky enough to train with him.

What makes this video special isn't just the technique but the culture. In Iran and across the Caucasus regions like Dagestan, and Chechnya, wrestling is woven into community centers. Kids train on the same mats as older men. Uncles, cousins, and retired wrestlers who may be 30, 40, or 50 years older can't compete physically anymore but still pass down timing, strategy, and mat sense. That intergenerational teaching doesn't happen in the U.S.

Here, our base is Folkstyle wrestling, taught in high schools and colleges through the NCAA system. Folkstyle emphasizes control, riding time, and constant shots. Old catch wrestlers criticized it for narrowing the art, focusing too much on doubles, singles, and high crotches while neglecting trips, foot sweeps, and throws. Watch an American practice and 60 to 80% of the drills are just shots. That toughness is valuable, but it creates predictability.

In MMA, predictability is deadly. If your game is only doubles and singles, the counter is obvious: knees and uppercuts. Ben Askren's KO is the classic example.

Now look at fighters from the Caucasus. They grow up with freestyle wrestling as their base, layered with Judo and Sambo. Khabib and Islam both hold Judo black belts and are decorated in Sambo, which is why their takedowns blend sweeps, hip throws, trips, and chain wrestling on the cage. They're far less predictable than a pure Folkstyle wrestler.

Khamzat Chimaev, who just won the UFC middleweight belt, is a little different. His base is freestyle wrestling as a multiple-time Swedish national champion, and he's also competed in Sambo and Judo. While not a Sambo "black belt" since Sambo doesn't use belts, his style shows that same variety: pressure wrestling, trips, and relentless ground control. At UFC 319 he set records with 12 takedowns, nearly 22 minutes of control, and over 500 strikes landed. That's not NCAA-style grinding but freestyle pressure with international flavor, tuned for MMA.

This old video of Muhammad shows the roots of that same philosophy. He was about 34 to 35 here, blending Judo into wrestling on a corner mat in a community center. To me, it's a snapshot of why the global game looks the way it does today: communal, creative, and never one-dimensional.

Step into the Way of Walking Alone

After a month of deep work in philosophy and AI experimentation, I'm excited to share something truly meaningful with you all.

Meet Musashi at dokkodo.ai/

This is the AI embodiment of Miyamoto Musashi's ancient wisdom, built on the principles of Dokkōdō, "The Path of Aloneness."

This isn't your typical chatbot. Musashi is a stoic, uncompromising guide who speaks with brutal honesty and razor-sharp clarity. No fluff, no empty comfort, just pure truth delivered with the precision of a master swordsman.

Come with intention when you ask your questions.
Musashi doesn't waste time on idle chatter or meaningless noise.

This project represents everything I'm passionate about: martial arts philosophy, minimalist design, and the cutting edge of AI technology. It's crafted for those brave enough to walk their own path, question everything, and seek genuine meaning beyond society's illusions.

This is a beta launch and I'm planning to refine and improve the experience over the next couple of weeks based on feedback from early users like you.

Experience it yourself at dokkodo.ai/

I'd love to hear what wisdom Musashi shares with you. Drop a comment and let me know what questions you brought to the Way, and any thoughts on how I can make this even better.

From eight years ago yesterday: I was honored to assist with the black belt testing in Kudo during a seminar held in New York City. In this video, the black belt candidate is being tested in the ne-waza (ground techniques) portion of Kudo.

Kudo is a Japanese hybrid martial art founded in 1981 by Takashi Azuma. It blends elements of karate, judo, boxing, Muay Thai, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, emphasizing full-contact combat while prioritizing safety and practicality. Practitioners wear protective headgear and gloves, enabling them to seamlessly integrate striking, throwing, and grappling techniques. With a presence in over 80 countries worldwide, Kudo promotes respect, education, and health for people of all ages.

I drove seven hours with my daughter and didn’t get to bed until 1 AM. Despite the long journey, it was an incredible honor to showcase my skills in front of Kudo's founder, Takashi Azuma. A true martial arts legend, Azuma held a 9th-degree black belt in Kudo, a 5th-degree black belt in Kyokushin Karate, and a 3rd-degree black belt in judo. He dedicated his life to creating a comprehensive martial art, and his legacy continues to inspire practitioners around the globe.

In this segment of the black belt test, only elbows and knees are allowed.
