Reflection- Growing up as a young girl in a small town, reading was my escape. I travelled the world through books and fell in love with England. I loved everything about England, from the small roads to the accent of its people. As a little girl, I could only dream of ‘maybe’ which was better than my reality. Looking back now, I guess I was delusional thinking pain, abandonment, trauma, tears, and fear of the future were only limited to my small town. Reading this book by Viola Davis not only forces me to reflect on my sad childhood and my traumatic upbringing it also gave me insight into how my past prepared me for my future in a foreign country at my earliest arrival to push, kick, and demand for my place in a society where people who look and speak like me are not expected to amount to anything. I guess trauma after all is not only UNIVERSAL it shapes who we ARE.
