Why Low Competition Keywords Aren’t Always Profitable

Many KDP authors get excited when they find keywords with low competition, thinking they’ve struck gold.
But here's a hard truth: low competition doesn't always mean profitable. While it may seem easier to rank for these keywords, if the search volume is too low, it won't translate into book sales. Let me explain this using real numbers.

Example 1:
Competitive Score: 12
Number of Competitors: 850
Search Volume: 1000

In this case, even though the competitive score is low (12), there are 850 competitors fighting for attention. With a search volume of 1000, the pool of potential readers is decent, but it's spread thin across a large number of books. The result? You’ll likely struggle to stand out.

Example 2:
Competitive Score: 12
Number of Competitors: 400
Search Volume: 1000

Now compare this to a keyword with the same search volume but only 400 competitors. Here, you’ve got fewer books to compete against. This increases your chances of ranking higher, getting noticed, and ultimately making sales.

It’s not just about low competition. Search volume plays a crucial role. If very few people are searching for a keyword, even if the competition is low, your book won’t sell because not enough readers are looking for it. It’s much better to go for keywords that have a balance between competition and search volume.

Next time you’re choosing keywords, aim for ones with decent search volume and manageable competition. That’s the key to boosting your book sales.
