🌊 The Legend of Titan 🌊

Many years ago, there was an island in Manus called Titan, home to a people known as the Titan, who spoke the Titan language. The island had two chiefs. One was the general chief of the whole island, named Tonguluwe. His home was built high up in a tree whose branches stretched over a hot stream, keeping his dwelling warm. From there, he could watch the sea, looking out for visitors, for he, like many in the village, was a cannibal, and strangers who arrived were often hunted and eaten.

The people of Titan had a gruesome way of delivering babies. When women went into labor, the mothers were cut open to remove the babies. The mothers would die in the process, and their bodies were later eaten, the only way the villagers knew to give birth. Because of this, the island had more men than women, and the few women who grew up were often married to the chiefs or their sons, maintaining the control of the ruling families.

Legend says that God cursed the island because of these cruel practices. One fateful night, while everyone slept, a massive explosion was heard, and shortly after, Titan began sinking into the deep blue sea, swallowing many of its people.

Those who survived paddled to nearby islands such as Baluan, Rambutcho, Mbuke, Pere, and Bunai and Others, where they settled and rebuilt their lives. Though they lost their homeland, they never lost their language or their seafaring skills. Today, the Titan descendants are still renowned as some of the best seafarers in Manus, and because of migration across the islands, the Titan language remains one of the most widely spoken languages in Manus.

Where Titan once stood, corals now thrive, forming vibrant underwater gardens. This reef, now known as Custer Reef, has become a hunting ground for sea cucumbers, tended by the very descendants of the Titan people, keeping alive the memory of their lost island.

A Mother’s Final Victory

On the night of May 4th, 2026, Rebecca Mayron finally let go. She didn't leave because she was weak; she left because her work was *finished*.
She held on until her son was a graduate.

She held on until the door to his future was open.

She held on until she knew her four children were safe.

To Jaypee, Gedepee, and the two little ones: Your mother gave you her life so you could have yours. She carried you to the top of the mountain, and only when she saw you standing there did she finally lay down to rest.
