Growing our own food is the way to go if you want to eat quality products that are healthy and have the taste we remember from when we where kids. I am lucky in having a 5 acres piece of land where I have around 800 fruit trees with more than 600 edible varieties, so I have room to experiment. My degree in Biology helps a lot in understanding the fundamentals of plant growing but is no substitute for experience. This channel was started to pass along some of that experience to others that can benefit from it, even if they grow only a few fruit trees, in a small backyard. If you enjoy my videos help the channel to grow by Subscribing and Sharing the videos you like.

Apparently, Youtube is adding a new automatic Auto-Dubbing feature when a new video is uploaded.
I made a video showing the 2 main types of pruning cuts that you need to learn to keep your fruit trees healthy and productive to test this new feature.
I'm afraid that, with the more technical language these videos have, the auto-dubbing will be in most cases funny and in others just annoying. If you use this feature let me know what you think. I would much rather have the option to include my own voice over using the multi-audio track option others channels have access to.
I could do it in Portuguese, Spanish and French besides English, and it would probably be more accurate regarding technical terms but, unfortunately, I don't have access to this feature.

After 44 years of teaching high school Biology I finally earned a much deserved retirement.

A very demanding final year and a work accident resulted in a very poor video production for most of 2024.

Being able to dedicate myself fully to the farm orchards should see many more videos published in the coming years, if all goes well.

Tomorrow, I will publish an overview of my 350+ fig variety orchard.

In late November, I plan to publish a video on my refined and improved method for rooting cuttings, just in time for the most popular rooting period of the year.

In December, I have scheduled an updated version of my video on Fig Pollination with lots of high quality macro footage, so every detail of the elusive cycle of the fig wasp can be seen.

After that, you can expect more videos on Pruning and Grafting Fruit Trees (let me know which video themes you would like to see, in the comments).

So, thanks again for subscribing to my channel and stay tuned for my next videos.
I very much appreciate your support.

When I published the first couple of videos, to respond to a request by a few friends that wanted to see how I grafted my fig trees, I could not have imagined how much the channel would grow in such a relatively short period.
After 2 years and a half of activity and 80 videos published the channel has reached 19 million views and has hit the 100.000 subscriber mark.

A big thanks to all the subscribers and viewers of the channel. Your support is the incentive to keep making and publishing videos, despite the hard work and the long hours that each one takes to film and produce.

I hope I can maintain the level of quality and interest in the following years and I will try to publish as frequently as possible (not so easy, with the kind of videos I like to make).

Meanwhile, It was about time to change the image of the channel (banner and logo). I believe its a bit more clean, even if it was made a bit in a hurry (the work load is quite heavy in this period). I hope you like it.

Thanks again for all your support.

A strong reaction to the second dose of the covid-19 vaccine (similar to a flu and perfectly normal as indicates that my immune system is doing its job defending me against the virus) and the arrival of a much needed new equipment, that is going to help immensely with the chores of the orchard, have taken some time from my already busy schedule and resulted in a longer than usual period without posting a video. Sorry about that.
Nevertheless, I still managed to finish one of the videos on Pruning I had in production - "Reshaping an Apple Tree in 3 Years". Go check it out and thanks for the support.

11 months after my last post, the channel is approaching the 100k subscriber mark. Simply amazing and I thank you all for the support.
But there is a downside to this. The number of comments on the videos is also growing and I am reaching a point were its impossible to respond to all the nice comments and questions the viewers post on each video.
So, I will be most active replying to comments in the first couple of days after publishing a new video. That's your best bet to get a reply, even on older subjects.
I will also be prioritizing questions from subscribers first. The problem is that I can only recognize subscribers that have made their subscriptions public (they have a red marker near their name in the comments, so they are easy to spot).
Sorry for all the subscribers and viewers that might not get a reply to their questions, but I simply don't have to time to answer all the comments. It would be a full time job.
Thanks again for all the nice comments and all the support. You guys are incredible.

In the past week the channel reached 50.000 subscribers. Not bad for one year and a half of activity.
I was so busy at the time, I didn't even post a "Thank You" to all that took the time to Subscribe and help the channel grow.
So, here it is. You are the ones that make me spend time filming and editing videos (even when the videos don't have the reception I would like - like this last one, about Growing Tomatoes - I think I am going to stick mainly with Grafting Videos in the future ;-)
Thank You again!

If you saw my last video with audio commentary (its my first one, so its probably the worst i can do, regarding sound and trying to speak English in a video).
Let me know what you think by replying to the following poll.

I finally managed to add a good microphone to my video gear.
Here's a new version with audio commentary of my video on "Pruning Young Apple Trees" instead of hardcoded subtitles (english subtitles still available if you turn them on)

Recording live is probably still not an option due to high traffic and wind noise but i will give it a try.

Let me know what you think about this new approach so i can decide if i am going to use it in my new upcoming videos.

Even if i change to adding audio commentary on my future videos i will still add subtitles in other languages, including English.

To my surprise, since last October (when i started dedicating a bit more time to the channel) the total numbers of subscribers raised quickly and has reached the 10.000 mark.
The last month has been very sad and troublesome, due to a death in the family, but doing these videos helps me to think of better things and keeps my mind busy.
In the next few weeks i will try to publish some delayed videos in the pruning series and a few new ones, of some useful grafting techniques i sometimes need to use, due to the conditions of rootstocks or scions, like the lateral bark grafting show in the next picture. Thank you all for the support. I appreciate it.
