Spent the last few days on the road, dropping into a handful of pubs across country Victoria. Different towns, different stories — but one thing always stood out: the publicans.
They’re the ones keeping the lights on and the doors open. Up early, up late, doing it all — organising, cooking, pouring beers, fixing, listening, storytelling. Holding the place together.
We’ll share more of their stories soon. But for now, here’s a look at the people behind the front bars — the ones keeping the heart of the town beating.

PUB FROM THE PAST: FORMER COPPER MINE HOTEL
Deep in the hills of Gippsland, at the dead end of a dirt road, the Cooper’s Creek Hotel stands watch over a town that’s long since disappeared.
Built more than a century ago, it served the copper miners who carved their lives into the mountains. For decades, it was the heart of Coopers Creek — a cold meal, a hot beer, and a place to shake off the dust after a shift underground.
But when the mine shut down, the town faded. The hotel hung on for a while. Then slowly, it followed. By the late 1900s, it was derelict — vandalised, stripped, and eventually gutted by fire in 1999. All that remained were two soot-blackened chimneys, the last standing pieces of a place that once roared with life.
But it didn’t stay dead.
A new owner stepped in and rebuilt it — faithfully, brick by brick, to match the original. The chimneys were kept, still standing exactly where they were. Blackened, yes. But holding firm.
Today, it sits quietly in private hands. Not pouring beers. Not hosting crowds. Just watching the bush take back the edges.
Most drive past the turnoff without ever knowing it’s there. But follow the dirt far enough, and you’ll find it.
Empty. Rebuilt. And still bearing the scars.

SAVING Coolamon Hotel. It took five years, a mountain of patience, and a whole lot of heart.
