O Muslim community! Pause and reflect.
Many of us see Basant simply as a seasonal festival, full of colors and kite flying. Perhaps our intentions are innocent, but anything rooted in a history or belief that clashes with our faith cannot be ignored.
What is the truth about Basant?
Historical research shows that celebrating Basant as a festival began around 1747. Its origin is linked to an incident in which a non-Muslim youth named Haqeeqat Rai insulted the honor of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When the matter was proven, the court at the time sentenced him, and the Muslim governor of Punjab, Nawab Zakariya Khan, confirmed the punishment.
Later, certain non-Muslim groups glorified this individual and began celebrating his memory with colorful clothes, kite flying, and fairs. This practice eventually came to be known as “Basant.” Historical records indicate that a memorial and fair were established in the eastern area of Lahore to honor this.
These details are documented by both Muslim and non-Muslim historians (for example: Tareekh-e-Lahore by Syed Abdul Latif, and the writings of Dr. B.S. Najjar).
Now the question arises:
Is it appropriate for a Muslim to participate in a festival associated with someone who insulted the Prophet ﷺ?
Can we ignore our faith, love for the Prophet ﷺ, and religious honor, simply in the name of fun?
True honor lies in this:
We can enjoy happiness, but it must be in a permissible, safe, and dignified way.
Not every color, custom, or festival is worth embracing especially those that carry a stain against our beliefs.
👉 That is why conscious Muslims choose to stay away from Basant.
Not out of hatred, and not by force, but out of love for the Prophet ﷺ, faith, and responsibility.
May Allah guide us to recognize the truth and act upon it.
Ameen.
