The Newman LB-1030 Lambeam Planer is designed to provide an excellent finish and precision dimensioning S4S on glulam beams up to 30” wide and 10” in thickness. The standard machine is set-up up to run at 30 to 150 fpm and is equipped with (6) Knife row Newman Helical Carbide Cutterheads.
The Machine can also be furnished with increased feed speeds and additional knife rows in the cutterheads. The LB-1030 is equipped with Servo-setworks which position the top cutterhead, one sidehead and all of the upper feed rolls. The bottom cutterhead and one sidehead are positioned with handcranks.

The New Newman LST-1044 Tilting Head Shaving Machine is designed to produce premium quality shavings for horse and poultry bedding. It is equipped with two 10-1/4" c.c. High Speed Steel Cutterheads that are each coupled to dedicated 75 HP Premium Efficiency Motors. The cutterhead assembly is tilted at each pass of the Log Box in a manner that facilitates 1/2" of stock removal per pass in each direction which increases production to between 100-120 Cubic Yards per Hour.
The tables also shift with each cycle of the Log Box, which allows the Logs to be shaved by both cutterheads in each direction. The cutterheads are locked in place with a new user-friendly hydraulic locking system.
The Heavy-Duty Hydraulic Feed System utilizes two hydraulic cylinders which reciprocate the Log Box over the Shaving Heads for Higher Levels of productivity and efficiency.

The Newman LB-1872 Lambeam Planer is a top and bottom planer capable of surfacing Glulam and other Timbers up to 18” tall x 72” wide, with cuts up to 3/8” per side. Each of the two cutterheads are coupled to its own 125 horsepower, 1,800 RPM TEFC Premium Efficiency electric motors. The feed system consists of three top feed rolls coupled with universal driveshafts to dedicated 15 HP helical gearboxes. The three-bottom feed-rolls are idle.
The top and bottom cutterheads are ground and jointed in the machine for superior finish, safety and ease of maintenance.
The bottom cutterhead assembly slides out the side of the machine for convenient, safe knife maintenance.
An optional sidehead unit is available with floating heads for surfacing beams with camber.
Other cut capacities are available.

The Newman SLB-3004 Fixed Box Shavings Machine is designed to produce premium quality shavings for use as agricultural bedding from logs and timbers.
Logs are loaded into a stationary hopper and shaved by four 10-1/4″ diameter cutterheads. Shavings are produced in both directions as the cutterhead carriage travels beneath the log hopper.
Shaving thickness and length can be easily adjusted. The SLB-3004 utilizes an innovative Pitman Arm Drive System. The cutterhead carriage rolls on extra heavy duty standard off-the-shelf V-roller bearing units (3 per side).
The cutterhead assemblies slide out on motorized slides, allowing the operator to perform cutterhead maintenance outside of the machine in a safe and easy manner.

The Newman LB-1872 Lambeam Planer is shown in this photo with its bottom cutterhead ejected for knife maintenance. The top and bottom cutterhead are ground and jointed in the machine for a superior finish at increased feed speeds.
The LB-1872 has a throat capacity of 72" wide and 18" in thickness.

Shown in this photo is a Newman LB-1872 Lambeam Planer. It has been installed, tested and is now ready to run production. The LB-1872 provides our customers with the ability to surface wide materials top and bottom up to 72″ in width and 18″ in height. It is an excellent choice for glulam and other timbers.

Newman Machine Company is proud to introduce the first double planer that properly prepares the board and provides an improved divided cut over existing self-centering, opposed cut planers.
Defects that are common to the species, those that are introduced thru sawing, drying and/or handling all combine to affect the quality and yield of the surfaced board. While removing an equal amount of material from the top and bottom surfaces can be advantageous, most planed boards will yield more usable lumber of higher quality if the surfaces can be equalized prior to finish planing.
The Newman EQ3-30 Equalization Planer takes rough surfacing to the next level with increased yield, higher quality finish and fewer defects.
The EQ3-30 includes a TS-30 Equalizing Module married to the infeed end of a S-382e Electric Drive Double Roughing Planer that work together to equalize the stock removal from the upper and lower surfaces of a board. The inventive aspect is the Equalizing Module which includes a single cutterhead with a combination pivot arm and press roll that control the amount of material removed by the first bottom cutterhead.
In use, thin boards that fit through the gap between the Automatic Cut ControlTM and the press roll move through the upstream section and are diverted by the Automatic Cut Control™ away from the cutterhead without any material being removed from the bottom surface of the board. Boards that are too thick to fit through the gap, contact against the press roll causing the Automatic Cut ControlTM to pivot downward. The amount of pivoting of the Automatic Cut ControlTM depends upon the thickness of the board and determines the amount of material removed from the bottom surface of the board. For boards above a predetermined thickness, the Automatic Cut Control™ pivots downward to a predetermined position causing a maximum amount of material to be removed from the bottom surface. An oversized board will force the press roll upward away from the Automatic Cut Control™ and cutterhead to allow the board to move through the upstream section.

Today a glance back at Baxter D. Whitney and his prize winning "Silver Medal Planer". Shown in this photo is a Belt Drive unit being utilized at A-1 Pattern Shop in Winchendon, Massachusetts.
Back in 1837 the goal of young Baxter D. Whitney was to build a more practical cylinder planing machine - one which insured the proper pressure and adjustment of feed rolls to prevent clipping the ends of the lumber planed. His determination to achieve this goal foreshadowed the construction of the first Whitney Planing Machine, and foretold the leadership position of Whitney’s entire product line of finer performance woodworking machinery.
It was this search for a practical planer which led young Mr. Whitney to view critically the imperfections of the few planers then on the market, and to start in Winchendon, Massachusetts, a firm which was to produce a long line of successful woodworking machinery - planers, scrapers, gauge lathes, barrel stave sawing machines, moulding or shaping machines and other woodworking equipment to meet and solve the woodworker’s problems.
His machines won a silver medal at the 1867 Paris Exposition, and were the object of great attention in the 1873 Vienna International Exhibition where they won a bronze medal given by the Austrian Government, and were awarded a bronze medal at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.
Baxter D. Whitney was born in Winchendon in 1817. The lad’s attention was early turned to machinery, probably largely owing to his father’s ownership of a woolen mill in Winchendon. It was in the repair shop of this old mill that the young man received the practical part of his education. His mechanical genius was manifested by his construction, when 10 years of age, of a small sawmill operated by water collected in a pond, which he formed by damming a small stream.
Before Baxter Whitney had reached manhood, he had become a skilled mechanic able to hold his own with men of many more years and experience.
His first business venture was the building of machinery for the manufacture of tubs and pails, utilizing for this purpose a corner of his father’s factory. In 1837 he built 16 looms for weaving cashmere. His next step was to build two or three steam jigs.
Then the young man tackled, successfully, the planing machine. Although it was not the first cylinder planing machine ever made, it was certainly the first practical cylinder planer built, and it embodied innovations which were Mr. Whitney’s original ideas.
His improvements accomplished the goal of preventing the clipping of ends of lumber planed, but the machine was, comparatively speaking, a primitive one. The youthful designer had not advanced as far as the introduction of the pressure bars, and only two feed rolls were employed.
His first commercially-built Whitney Planing Machine was constructed in 1846, built in about six weeks and sold, when completed, to Messrs. Murdock & Fairbanks of Winchendon. The machine was a practical success, and some of the principles incorporated by the young man in his first planer are still used in planers today.
Improvements incorporated in the machines he built attracted more than local interest and attention and demands came in from other sections for still other machines. Usually, the wants of the customer were not only met, but the inventive genius of the young man was brought into play to secure some changes or additions that made the machine constructed by him a decided improvement over the one previously used.
The dam at the Whitney plant, which furnished water power (until Whitney pioneered in turning to two-phase electricity), was built by young Whitney in 1845.
At the outbreak of the Civil War a large number of Mr. Whitney’s employees enlisted, and he was strongly inclined to close his works. But, while the matter was in abeyance, so many new orders were received that instead of closing, he was obliged to exert himself to find skilled labor necessary to execute the orders. Prices also improved, and he was kept busy building machinery for turning out the old-fashioned muskets and even on the then-new Springfield rifles. Mr. Whitney himself designed the machinery employed in this work.
In 1867, at the Paris Exposition, Mr. Whitney exhibited a planing machine, a scraper, a gauge lathe, and several other machines. He received a silver medal, and all his machines were sold before the close of the exposition. In 1873 he again exhibited, this time in Vienna, but was dismayed to realize that the 1867 purchases had plainly been made merely to facilitate the imitation by other manufacturers of the machines shown at Paris.
The following few years saw the introduction of a large number of new Whitney woodworking machines. The Silver Medal Planer (1866-1878) was used in surfacing lumber and somewhat later the P-1 “New Whitney” Planer, (1878-1892), was built. This planer was the first to incorporate a chipbreaker which was mounted to swing concentrically with the cutterhead. This is now known as an "orbital chipbreaker" and is employed in heavy duty, premium quality, precision, Industrial Newman Planers to this very day.

In this photo the motor side (with safety guards in place) of the Newman FT-1600 Feed Table is shown. The FT-1600 High Speed Feed Table is designed to ensure that a continuous ribbon of lumber is available to the planer. The machine frame consists of structural steel providing maximum rigidity.
The feed works include two pineapple rolls and one top outfeed roll. Each is driven by an individual electric motor. The pineapple rolls may be quickly raised and lowered to feed thick or thin lumber through the use of jam clearing controls furnished as standard equipment.
The bottom rolls are V-belt driven by a single electric motor and are reversible and interchangeable for wear. All feed rolls are knurled and chromed for longer life.
The long guide is equipped with ball bearing rollers to reduce drag, minimize wear, and improve operating efficiency.
-Optional adjustable first pineapple feedroll to handle varying width stock.
-Available in 5, 6, 7, 8 roll lengths to handle the longest material.
-16” diameter rolls and pineapples
-Feed speeds up to 4000 fpm
