⚡ Huge EV charging news!

From 1st April, Octopus are halving the overnight price on Intelligent Octopus Go.

It was already incredibly cheap… but it will now cost just £2.62 to fill my EV overnight 🤯

For my Tesla Model Y that works out at around 0.9p per mile.

This change comes alongside the government’s wider electricity pricing updates that you may have seen in the news, but what’s really interesting is that Octopus are choosing to apply the reduction to their off-peak rates as well, which is fantastic news for EV drivers (as well as our washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher!)

Meanwhile petrol and diesel prices are heading in the opposite direction. With tensions in the Middle East pushing oil prices higher and disrupting supply routes, pump prices have already been climbing and could keep rising if things escalate.

It’s a pretty stark reminder of how volatile and exposed fossil fuels are to global events, whereas charging an EV at home can be predictable and incredibly cheap.

For anyone wondering whether EVs work for long drives or family holidays, they absolutely do. I drove my EV all the way to Paris, and thanks to changes like this that trip has effectively just become even cheaper.

👇

If you’re not already with Octopus, my referral link is in the first comment.
If you switch using it we both get £50 account credit, which is a nice little bonus.

I’ve also linked my “Drive an EV to Paris” video showing exactly how easy (and affordable) a long EV road trip can be.

Would you believe it cost us only £38 to drive 5 people to Paris? 🥐🚙

🚗⚡ So… we drove a Tesla Model Y from Liverpool to Paris.

No route planning
No spreadsheets
Just bags, kids, charging stops when needed - and France ahead of us.

A lot of people think long-distance EV travel is stressful or slow, so I filmed the whole trip to show what it’s actually like in the real world - every stop, cost, delay, surprise and win.

If you're EV-curious or have friends who still think "you can’t road trip an electric car"… this might interest you 👇

Honest question… do you still hear people repeating old Electric Car myths in 2025?

Everyone’s talking about the new 3p-per-mile EV tax announced in the Budget.

There’s a lot of panic online about whether this makes EVs “expensive to run”… but earlier this year we drove from Liverpool to Paris as a family of five, with zero route planning, and the outbound cost came to just £38.72 in electricity for 446 miles.

That works out at 8.7p per mile all-in.
Even with the new tax added, the total becomes 11.7p per mile. Still far cheaper than petrol or diesel.

One interesting question people aren’t talking about:
A big chunk of those miles were on French roads, not UK ones.
So should UK drivers really be taxed for mileage done outside the UK?

🎥 Here’s the full real-world breakdown from our trip:

What do you think — will the 3p-per-mile tax meaningfully change EV running costs, or is it being blown out of proportion?

I’ve just relaunched this video with a brand new title and thumbnail so it (hopefully!) reaches the people it was made for: anyone wondering whether long-distance EV travel actually works in real life.

To test it properly, we drove from Liverpool to Paris as a family of five with zero route planning… and recorded every charging stop, cost, speed and delay along the way.

Here’s what I want to know from you:

👉 Do you trust the UK + French EV charging networks for a 500+ mile trip with no planning?
Why - or why not?

This wasn’t a controlled test. It was real roads, real weather, real kids on a real holiday, real queues, real chargers… the good and the bad.
(Spoiler: there was no bad.)

And the total cost to get from Liverpool to our campsite outside Paris genuinely surprised me.

If you missed it over the weekend, I’ve just uploaded a new video where we drive our Electric Car from Liverpool to Paris and back with zero route planning, zero charging stress and three kids in the car.

Watch it here: https://youtu.be/pG501s250CU

I wanted to show what a proper long-distance EV trip looks like in real life - not the scare stories, not the myths, just how it actually works when you set off and let the car handle things. No rerouting, no waiting around, no hassle.

If you get a minute today, have a watch and let me know what you think. Your comments really do help the video get seen by more people, so thank you :)
