It’s truly hard to believe it but 10-years ago I dropped a project called Intern Aquarium that changed my life. So much life has happened since then that I’m having a hard time figuring out what to write about it but I'll try…
With the help of a bunch of talented people I was able to make an introspective/satirical project based on my time as an intern in New York. I had a chip on my shoulder and I wanted to be a “real artist” so fucking bad but there was no predicting the journey it would take me on. Millions of streams, touring the country, label meetings, etc… I was able to do a lot of cool shit.
I won’t act like things have been perfect this entire time though… for a while it was hard living in the shadow of this giant as I continued to create art and find myself over the years… In many ways I resented it. I would put my all into many different songs/projects and feel a sense of self doubt when they didn’t do as well. As someone who generally always believed in himself, this was a new feeling for me. When your livelihood gets connected to your art, it's easy for your association with it to change. I hated feeling like this and it took me a LONG time to learn how to shake that feeling and find myself again. Which brings us today….
It's crazy to think that 10 years later I’m still doing what I love for a living and still have that same chip on my shoulder (I don’t think it will ever go away). I’m thankful for what Intern Aquarium has done for me and all the people it was able to impact. My sound has changed so much over the years but I’m thankful for that to be the true starting point on this journey.
It’s a little bitter sweet because I have some things planned for the Fall to send it off right butttt 10 years feels like a good point to finally close this chapter of my career. That being said, this will be the LAST year that I perform any Intern Aquarium songs. This will be the LAST year that I drop Intern Aquarium merch… shit it will probably be last year I even mention it.
This isn’t out of negativity, I’m just ready to move on. If our journey together ends here that’s cool/I understand. But if you stick around, I’m getting ready to drop some of my best work to date and look forward to growing with you. At heart I’m still that same intern, just a little balder.
