2nd peter 1:2-11
Fruitful Growth in the Faith
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control [d]perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither [e]barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
To your virtue, strive to add knowledge. Not merely general knowledge of the Gospel or God's Word; what we need is PRECISE, ACCURATE knowledge of Christ.

ONE FAMILY IN CHRIST

EPHESIANS 2:19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. (NLT)

A person’s response to the gospel preached determines his salvation or condemnation. When the gospel is accepted, believed and confessed, we say that the person is saved. However, when the gospel is mocked, ridiculed as foolishness and rejected, we say that the person is not saved or has chosen condemnation.

There is an instant, permanent change and exchange that takes place when a person believes the gospel. Instantly, the believer becomes righteous, justified, washed, sanctified, delivered, Holy Spirit-filled, eternally forgiven and a citizen of heaven.

This change cannot be seen or felt with the senses. There is nothing outward physically that tells the difference between the person who believed the gospel and the person who did not believe. After salvation, we eat the same food, attend the same school, face the same common challenges of life, spend the same currency and live in the same house as the man not saved. This means that the blessings in Christ are not physical or material.

From our opening text, another blessing of the man in Christ is that he is born into the family of God. This birth is a spiritual birth. Every believer is born into this supernatural family. We share the same DNA and inheritance. This family is an eternal family. Our physical exit on this earth does not end this family. Irrespective of where you are, age, gender and socioeconomic status, we are one family in Christ. Apostle Paul used bread to teach our oneness,

1 Corinthians 10:17,
“For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread”.

We have one Father in Christ,

Ephesians 4:4-6,
“There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all”.

Though we live in different areas in the world, we are one in Christ,

Romans 12:4,
“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office”.

We must see ourselves as one body.

The understanding of our supernatural family and relationship is very important. Though we may belong to different church groups and have a different understanding of doctrinal subjects, we must understand that as long as the person has believed the gospel, we are one family. The way we relate to ourselves as believers must reflect our oneness in Christ. Apostle Paul rebuked the brethren in Corinth for not recognizing their oneness in Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:5-6,
“I speak to your shame. Is it so that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? 6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers”.

Strife, quarrel, bitterness, faction and the like among believers show a poor understanding of our supernatural family in Christ. Our family in Christ is superior to our natural family. The bond between believers is stronger than the bond among our natural family members.

Say with me: I relate with other believers as family members in Christ.

Romans 4:1-4
4 What then shall we say that Abraham our father[a] has found according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was [b]accounted to him for righteousness.” 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted [c]as grace but as debt.

The forgiveness of sins offered by Jesus is not one of works but of faith. We cannot earn His forgivenes. We cannot earn God's mercies. But He, in His eternal wisdom, has made it available to us simply by His grace. Today, choose to accept the love of God and His forgiveness for your sins.
