People of the Moon official video is out now! 🌙🪩
After Bar Mediterraneo, we found ourselves struggling under the weight of expectations, pushing us toward a more analytical than spontaneous approach.
Then everything changed. We went back to our DJ sets, those nights playing 70s tracks with a very specific rhythmic pattern we've always been obsessed with and asked ourselves: why not build something around that?
People of the Moon was born from that instinct. The "People of the Moon" represent our purest selves, the part that cries out to break free from social pressures and the exhaustion of performing in today's society.
This track gave us our freedom back, and it became such a powerful motto that we named the entire album after it. We tried to stop over-analyzing and just let the music flow. We hope you feel that same energy. Welcome to our new journey. 🌙💙🫂✨

last year has been an idle moment for us. We spent some time with our beloved ones, enjoyed nature, cooked some nice ragù and… guess what?? Made a lot of music 😊 and can’t wait to share some new NG vibes soon. Very soon.
This pause has enabled us to reflect on the inequalities and lack of diversity, not only in the music industry, but throughout all aspects of society. Especially, last summer’s worldwide outcry about these issues has ignited something inside of us.

We have now decided to officially change our name to NU GENEA.

Picking up from the greek word “γενεά” (genea), meaning “birth”, Nu Genea wants to signify a new birth in our consciousness, as well as a name that reflects more directly the concept of our music, which is based on mixing styles and sounds, that during the history have touched the gulf of Napoli, giving them a new birth. This slight letter change has shifted the meaning significantly to better meet what we hope to achieve through music.
Our former name was chosen in 2013 with respect to the nature of the island of New Guinea, in the Pacific Ocean, especially to its beautiful faunal and floral variety, which gave us an idea of colourful music. Later on, we realised that, historically in America, Southern Italians (like us) were called "Guineas" as a racial slur, referring to our darker skin tones and we felt we had a claim (even if it was far fetched) to use that word. Initially it felt empowering but we didn’t realise it was only perpetuating untrue stereotypes. We were using the name in a very naive and superficial way, taking into account our perspective and not the others’: those places have a very complex history and distinct culture. Therefore, we have no ownership to use that name without having a real connection to it.

We do think that exchanging ideas, styles and traditions is one of the tenets and joys of a modern and multicultural society, but connecting human beings deserves a careful sensitivity.
Each of us is a small yet important piece of a huge puzzle that can lead to something very good. We have deeply thought about this and it’s a very meaningful decision to us.

durante lo scorso anno siamo stati inattivi sui Social. Abbiamo passato un po' di tempo con i nostri cari, ci siamo goduti la natura, abbiamo cucinato degli ottimi ragù e… abbiamo composto tanta nuova musica 😊 che non vediamo l'ora di condividere con voi!

Questa pausa ci ha permesso di riflettere sulle disuguaglianze e sulla carenza di diversità etnico-culturale, non solo nell'industria musicale, ma in più ambiti della società. In particolare le proteste della scorsa estate, relative a questi motivi, hanno acceso qualcosa dentro di noi.

Da qui la nostra decisione di cambiare nome in NU GENEA.

Con riferimento alla parola greca “γενεά” (genea), che significa “nascita”, Nu Genea vuole significare una nuova nascita nella nostra coscienza, nonché un nome che riflette più direttamente il concetto della nostra musica, ovvero miscelare stili e sonorità, che nel corso della storia hanno toccato il golfo di Napoli, e dare loro una nuova nascita. Questa leggera modifica di lettere ha cambiato considerevolmente il significato e ci riconcilia all’obiettivo primario che si prefigge la nostra musica.
Il nostro precedente nome è stato scelto nel 2013 in relazione alla natura dell'isola della Nuova Guinea, nell'Oceano Pacifico, in particolare alla sua splendida varietà faunistica e floreale, che ci ispirava un'idea di musica ricca di colori.

In seguito ci siamo resi conto che, storicamente in America, gli italiani del sud (come noi) venivano apostrofati “Guineas", riferendosi alla tonalità di carnagione più scura e perciò ci sentivamo autorizzati (erroneamente) ad usare quella parola senza renderci conto di continuare ad alimentare vecchi stereotipi.
All'inizio ci sembrava una scelta giusta, in modo ingenuo e superficiale, tenendo conto solo della nostra prospettiva e non di quella degli altri. Quei luoghi e quelle popolazioni hanno una storia molto complessa ed una cultura specifica, pertanto non sentiamo di avere il diritto di utilizzare quel nome senza avere una reale connessione con esso.

Pensiamo che lo scambio di idee, stili e tradizioni sia uno dei cardini e delle gioie di una società moderna e multiculturale, ma per favorire una maggiore connessione tra esseri umani c’è bisogno di un'attenta sensibilità.
Ci abbiamo riflettuto a fondo e questa è una decisione molto importante per noi.
