This photo from 1975 shows brothers Michael and Sean McQuilken posing on a mountain peak in California. They are smiling, pointing at their hair, which is standing straight up. They thought it was funny.
They did not know that this is a warning sign. When your hair rises like that, the air around you has become electrically charged, meaning a lightning strike is seconds away.
Moments after this picture was taken, lightning hit them. Both survived, although Sean suffered severe third degree burns.
