With a t-shirt, a title, and a few unsanctioned matches under his belt, Andy Kaufman launched his career as the Women's Wrestling Champion of the World.
Seen here touting his new gimmick at the Playboy Club in Atlantic City, New Jersey on October 11, 1981, the comedian actually had his first sanctioned wrestling match the following night on October 12, 1981 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis!
With 5,393 fans in attendance, Kaufman introduced himself as the “World’s Intergender Champion” and stated he only wrestled women. Then, in a series of mid-card matches, he defeated three female fans and drew the fourth when time expired, managing to hold onto his title. Partying at the Playboy Club didn't seem to affect his performance in the ring; Andy was officially a wrestling champion now.
