This week we’ve had to get serious about putting a system in place for managing our Bulgarian yard.

When we first arrived, we were new to all of this — honestly a bit naive about what it really takes to run a homestead properly.

Now, over 6 months into this journey, we’re starting to properly understand and appreciate the advice and knowledge we’ve had from the homesteading community from day one… and we’re finally beginning to apply it.

Because one thing is clear: if we don’t change how we’re doing things — and fast — this “fresh start” won’t last.

This is the side of rebuilding life in rural Bulgaria that rarely gets shown. Not the highlights… but the pressure behind it 🇧🇬

We moved abroad partly because we wanted a simpler life and lower living costs. For a while, it genuinely felt possible.

But lately, something feels different.

Prices keep rising, even in places people still call “cheap.” Food, transport, utilities — it all adds up fast now. Meanwhile, online, people still talk about moving abroad like it’s some hidden life hack.

It’s made us wonder:
Are people chasing an outdated idea of “affordable living”?

Is inflation basically making every country feel expensive now?

Or are expectations just unrealistic because social media only shows the highlights?

We’re currently in Bulgaria and noticing a lot more conversations about costs than when we first arrived.
