Max Takes On World

Just got back from my birthday weekend in Norway 🇳🇴

I spent some much-needed time in nature, surrounded by pristine lakes, crisp air, and quiet mountains. Honestly, the contrast from city life in Barcelona was refreshing — it felt like a deep reset. 🌲

Wishing you all a peaceful, productive week ahead!

Max Takes On World

Writing this to you from Morocco with love.

Tagine, my first Moroccan dish—oh boy, it hit all the right spots. The tender meat, the burst of flavors from preserved lemons, and the olives left me wanting more. I thank God for the chance to be here, for the opportunity to experience this vibrant culture. I look up and smile—we’re in Morocco.

The hospitality here has been heartwarming. People say “you’re welcome” even before I’ve thanked them—a little unusual at first, but I’ve come to see it as a reflection of their generosity. However, navigating a new culture has its challenges, and yesterday I had an encounter that left me feeling both cautious and reflective.

While walking through the medina and following my GPS to my riad, a man approached me unexpectedly. He said, “You’re going the wrong way,” with such confidence that it made me pause. Then, he added, “Prayer is happening that way, and only Muslims can go there. I’ll show you another way.” This explanation made me question whether I’d unknowingly wandered into a restricted area, so when he asked, “Where are you going?” I told him the name of my riad. He responded quickly, “Follow me, I’ll show you the way.”

At first, I appreciated his eagerness to help, but I kept checking my GPS as we walked. Soon, I realized we were taking a much longer route than necessary. I politely said, “Thanks, I’ve got it from here,” but he insisted, “The GPS doesn’t work here. Trust me.” The red flags started going off. Despite his persistence, I stayed calm and followed my instincts, sticking to what the GPS showed me.

After a few more minutes, I firmly told him, “I’m okay now, I can manage,” but he continued walking alongside me. Then came the moment I dreaded: “Give me your bag,” he said casually. I immediately said, “No,” and quickened my pace, firmly keeping control of the situation. A short while later, he switched tactics, asking me for money instead. He explained all the reasons I should tip him—how he had “helped” me and how it was only fair.

By this point, I was sure his entire approach had been a scam from the beginning. I wondered if I’d even been going the wrong way in the first place or if it was all a ploy to gain my attention. I calmly told him, “I didn’t ask for your help,” and tried to keep the situation from escalating. I could’ve called him out directly, but instead, I simply said, “God bless you,” several times, hoping to defuse the interaction. He kept following me for a while, continuing to ask for money, but eventually, I managed to walk away.

The whole experience left me conflicted. On one hand, I understand that some people might resort to tactics like this out of desperation. On the other hand, it left me feeling guarded. I don’t want to group everyone into the same category, but interactions like this make it hard to know who to trust. When someone approaches with “Hey my friend, where are you from?” my instincts tell me to keep walking, but I also don’t want to miss out on meeting genuinely kind and warm locals.

Later that evening, I had a wonderful conversation with a group of locals who were truly welcoming and had no ulterior motives. It was a reminder that, despite a few challenging encounters, Morocco is full of warmth and kindness. This journey is teaching me to balance caution with openness, and I’m grateful for the lessons I’m learning along the way.

Here’s to my first full day in Morocco—filled with challenges, gratitude, and the promise of more adventures ahead.
