How Sports Performance Anxiety Can Be Your Best Friend?
Today I want to share a different perspective on sports performance anxiety—how to take a feeling that seems negative and turn it into something useful that you can put into action immediately.
First, let’s look at what “anxiety” really is.
Anxiety is a practiced habit of predicting a negative future outcome.
Failing a test… striking out… missing a shot.
It’s not about the present moment.
It’s about something that hasn’t happened yet—the competition, the game, the performance.
If you continuously practice thoughts of failure over and over again, they eventually begin to feel real. You’ve convinced your mind, and it becomes a belief that lives within you.
You’ve practiced it so often that it starts to feel normal… and your behaviour follows.
As an athlete, you begin to play it safe.
You hold back.
You stop taking chances—all because of the fear of what might happen.
Having lived this myself, I understand it.
And now—it’s time to change your story.
Here are a few ways to begin using anxiety as your best friend.
Think of anxiety as a signal—a warning that your focus needs to change.
It’s telling you that you need to create a different outcome in your mind.
Here are a series of questions to help guide you in a more positive direction:
1. What would I like to have happen instead? What is the positive outcome I want?
2. Do I truly want to make this change?
3. Do I need to change my environment?
4. Do I have the resources to make this change?
5. Do I already have the skills I need?
6. Do I need to tweak what I am doing?
7. Do I need to better understand my role and responsibilities?
8. Do I need to improve my concentration?
9. Do I need more practice in challenging situations?
10. Do I need better or more support?
Give yourself time to answer these questions—and be honest with yourself.
Once you begin to answer them honestly, something starts to change.
You move from feeling stuck… to feeling more in control.
Instead of being overwhelmed by anxiety, you begin to see it for what it really is—information that can help guide you toward a better outcome.
Now, you are using anxiety as feedback.
As data.
Something you can use to adjust and create a different result.
Your mind begins to work toward solutions instead of repeating the same patterns.
Keep it simple.
Focus on the step-by-step process that will move you toward the result you want.
Create a clear mental picture of success and allow your imagination to explore what that looks and feels like.
Give yourself permission to be successful.
And if you make a mistake, use it as feedback—so you can respond differently the next time you are in that situation.
You are in control of your story… if you choose to be.
Instead of seeing this feeling as anxiety, begin to recognize it as nervous energy—energy that can sharpen your focus and increase your effort.
The feeling hasn’t changed… but your understanding of it has.
Anxiety may have once held you back…
But now, it can become your greatest ally.
Because it’s not the feeling that matters—
It’s how you choose to use it.
You’ve got this.
