A DD214 is the U.S. military’s “Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.” It’s the main record of a veteran’s service.

Here’s the catch:

It’s not public information by default. A DD214 contains personal data (SSN, address, medical codes, etc.), so you can’t just look up anyone’s.

Whose you can access:

Your own – you can request it directly from the National Archives (NPRC) or through the VA.

Another veteran’s – only if you’re next of kin (un-remarried widow/widower, child, parent, or sibling).

Public access – limited. Only certain parts (like dates of service, branch, final rank, awards) can be released under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Sensitive details (SSN, medical) are redacted.

Where to go:

National Archives – Request Military Service Records
(that’s the official portal).

You can request online (via eVetRecs), by mail, or even by fax if you’re feeling very 1997.

In short:
If you’re the veteran or their next of kin → you can get the full DD214.
If you’re just curious about some random person → at best, you’ll get a scrubbed “summary” version.
