ZESCO UNITED EDGE JWANENG GALAXY IN SEVEN-GOAL THRILLER🗞️🇿🇲⚽️🇧🇼
MATCH REPORT | Full Time: ZESCO 4-3 Galaxy
Zesco United will travel to Botswana with a 4–3 advantage after a thrilling CAF Confederation Cup second-round, first-leg victory over Jwaneng Galaxy at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Head Coach Emmanuel Siwale made one change to the side that defeated FC 105 of Congo Brazzaville 5–0 in the previous round. Mathews Chabala was handed his CAF Confederation Cup debut, starting ahead of skipper Lindo Mkhonta.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Thabang Sesinyi, who finished off a swift attacking move. Zesco United’s Amine Hiver thought he had levelled in the 22nd minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Persistent attacking play eventually paid off when Hiver equalised after being set up by Kapamba to make it 1–1.
However, Jwaneng Galaxy regained their lead in the 30th minute after a goalkeeping error from Philip Sakauta, with Sesinyi netting his second of the match. Just before the break, Zesco United were awarded a penalty following a handball inside the box, and Hiver converted from the spot to make it 2–2 at half-time.
In the second half, Zesco United began strongly, with Coach Siwale introducing Pascal Phiri and Freddy Michael for Abraham Siakombo and Peter Musukuma. The changes made an immediate impact as Phiri delivered a precise cross that found Kabaso Chongo, who put Zesco ahead 3–2 in the 70th minute.
Phiri continued to trouble the opposition, providing another assist for Zachariah Chilongoshi to extend the lead to 4–2. Coach Siwale later made further substitutions, bringing on Shemmy Mayembe and Vitalis G. for Hiver and Chilongoshi in the 80th minute.
Jwaneng Galaxy pulled one back in the 85th minute through Chicco Molefe, setting up a tense finish. Despite late pressure, Zesco United held on to secure a 4–3 win at home.
Speaking after the match, Coach Siwale expressed confidence in his team ahead of the return leg.
“They managed to score three goals; we can also score on their side, and this is what football can do. I am confident going into the return leg, but we could have done better, especially in terms of conceding,” said Coach Siwale.
Zesco United will now travel to Botswana for the return leg to be played next Saturday at Fracis Town’s Obed Itani Chilume Stadium where they will aim to protect their 4–3 lead and advance to the group stage of the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
MUTAPA SETS EYES ON CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP STAGE WITH VIPERS ALONE IN THE WAY
Power Dynamos Football Club return to continental action this Sunday as they take on Ugandan giants Vipers SC in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League second-round, first leg at the St. Mary's Stadium in Kitende, Kampala.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference yesterday, Head Coach, Osward Mutapa, said the team is fully aware of the challenge ahead but is equally determined to get a result away from home. Mutapa remains confident in the depth of his squad, pointing to the resilience shown in the previous round.
Power Dynamos, fondly known as 'Aba Yellow,' have enjoyed unwavering support from their fans since returning to the CAF Champions league prompting Mutapa to pay tribute to the faithful home champions.
Meanwhile, Club Vice-Captain, Salulani Phiri, said the players are motivated not only by Club pride but also by national ambition. "Regaining the four CAF slots is important for Zambian football, and every result counts toward that goal," Phiri said.
And Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Executive Committee Member and Head of Delegation, Jordan Maliti, has expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and spirit. He said the technical bench and players have shown great professionalism and unity, adding that he believes they will make the country proud in Uganda.
The game will be played on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 18:00 hours, Zambian time.
The return match is set for Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Copper Queens head coach Nora Häuptle has expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparations in Morocco ahead of the 2025 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), saying the players have settled in well and are steadily building cohesion and focus.
Speaking to FAZ Media from the team’s pre-tournament camp in Casablanca, Häuptle confirmed that the full squad is now in camp after some players experienced travel delays through Dubai.
“We were happy to arrive a couple of days ago. The last players who had been stuck in transit arrived on Wednesday, so we now have a complete squad,” she said. “The mood is excellent — we’ve found a good balance between having fun and working hard. The coaches are very satisfied so far with the progress.”
With just eight days remaining until the Copper Queens kick off their Group A campaign, Häuptle emphasized the importance of team values and identity, noting that the technical bench and players had a productive session reflecting on how they want to present themselves both on and off the pitch.
“We had a very good session yesterday where we talked about our values, our culture, and how we want to be recognized. Besides football, it’s important how we act and express ourselves,” she said.
On the tactical front, Häuptle said the team has already begun tailoring its approach to the tournament opener against hosts Morocco.
“We’re already focusing on the opening game, adjusting the strategy, fine-tuning, and ensuring the players are physically ready. Morocco is a strong side, runners-up from the last tournament. But we want to hunt them, challenge them, and find a good strategy to match their strengths.”
Group A features Zambia, Morocco, Senegal, and DR Congo, a competitive mix that promises exciting fixtures. But Häuptle remains confident in the team’s preparation and mindset.
To the fans back home, the Swiss tactician delivered a heartfelt message:
“We hope as many as possible can come to Morocco to support us. And if not, be behind your televisions. We expect the whole nation to cheer for us, support us, and carry us through the group stage.”
The Copper Queens open their WAFCON 2024 campaign against Morocco on July 5.
