With the monsoon just days away residents across Pune are once again staring at a familiar nightmare as hundreds of roads remain dug up and unrestored across the city. The Pune Municipal Corporation had set April 30 as the deadline for all government agencies and private companies to complete road reinstatement works after digging for utility cables and service lines. That deadline has passed and with only five days left before the rains arrive many stretches remain incomplete leaving commuters vulnerable to waterlogging potholes and accident prone roads. The civic body had permitted digging of around 75000 running metres of roads and collected nearly Rs 50 crore as restoration charges from private firms and government agencies yet the ground reality tells a completely different story.
Residents from Kothrud to Satara Road are furious and say the same problem repeats every single monsoon season despite the presence of newly elected corporators and a fresh civic body. Citizens groups have pointed to an alleged nexus between certain civic officials, contractors and politicians as the root cause of delayed and substandard road repair work. The leader of opposition in PMC echoed these concerns saying work is not only delayed but also half done at several locations. PMC road department officials maintained that ward offices have been asked to speed up work and that more time would be given where tendering processes faced delays while emergency drainage and water supply works would continue to be permitted.

Responding to a flood of complaints from daily commuters and transport operators the National Highways Authority of India NHAI has launched a major two phase road overlaying project on the heavily trafficked Pune Solapur national highway. The work is divided between the Pune to Indapur and Indapur to Solapur stretches and is being carried out using Dense Bituminous Macadam technology which involves laying an entirely new surface layer rather than simply patching existing potholes. NHAI officials have set a firm deadline of June 26 for completion deliberately targeting the pre monsoon window to spare commuters further misery during heavy rains. The upgraded surface is expected to significantly boost road durability and improve riding quality and reduce travel time across one of the most critical highway corridors in Maharashtra.

The deterioration of the Pune Solapur highway had reached alarming levels with deep potholes forcing vehicles to brake suddenly during peak hours leading to dangerous near miss accidents and fuel wastage for regular travellers. Commuters travelling between areas like Hadapsar and Indapur have described driving on the highway as extremely stressful with uneven surfaces slowing traffic to a crawl. NHAI's Pune manager assured that this initiative goes far beyond routine maintenance with teams monitoring progress round the clock to meet the deadline. Once completed the project is expected to dramatically improve traffic flow and enhance road safety and bring lasting relief to the thousands of commuters and truck drivers and agricultural transporters who depend on this vital corridor every single day.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled an ambitious Rs 6,000 crore master plan to overhaul the heavily congested Pune-Bengaluru highway and dramatically improve connectivity between Pune and Satara. The sweeping infrastructure upgrade includes a proposed six-lane elevated highway between Ravet and Jambhulwadi, for which a Detailed Project Report has already been sent to NHAI headquarters in Delhi and is expected to receive clearance next month. The Union Minister recently inspected the stretch and personally directed officials to accelerate the pending projects, giving the initiative fresh momentum. Once completed, authorities believe the travel time between Pune and Satara could be slashed to nearly one hour.
On the ground, progress is already visible on several fronts. The newly completed tunnel at Khambatki Ghat is set to open for full-scale traffic soon, promising to cut Pune-Satara travel time by 15 to 20 minutes on its own. Multiple flyovers and underpasses have been constructed along the route, with more planned at key congestion hotspots. NHAI also intends to replace the existing 5.5-metre asphalt service roads with wider 10.5-metre concrete roads between Khed Shivapur and Dehu Road, creating dedicated four-lane corridors to divert local village traffic away from the main highway. Pre-monsoon pothole repairs and road levelling work are also currently underway to ensure smoother commuting in the near term.

Kothrud MLA and state cabinet minister took decisive action on Saturday, convening an urgent meeting with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) officials to tackle the growing menace of frequent power outages plaguing the Baner and Balewadi areas of Pune. With residents bearing the brunt of relentless power cuts during peak summer, the minister issued firm directions to prepare both short-term and long-term action plans. A strict six-month deadline was set for commissioning two new feeders, while authorities were urged to fast-track land acquisition for a much-needed power substation in the area. Monthly follow-up meetings were also announced to ensure accountability and track progress.
Residents of Baner and Balewadi have been vocal about the hardships caused by repeated outages, with many reporting that voltage fluctuations have begun damaging household electrical appliances. Locals have called the situation completely unacceptable, especially during the scorching summer months, and have proposed the formation of a joint committee involving local representatives for faster resolution. The minister also directed officials to coordinate closely with the Pune Municipal Corporation and other government agencies to streamline road digging permissions needed for laying new power cables, signalling that a comprehensive overhaul of the area's ageing power infrastructure is now firmly on the agenda.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced a major upgrade for the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, planning to widen the highly frequented corridor from its current six lanes to a massive 10 lanes. This decision aims to permanently resolve traffic bottlenecks, particularly during holidays and weekends when daily vehicular flow spikes up to 120,000 vehicles. Driven by the recent opening of the 13.3-km "Missing Link" bypass and the rising operations at the Navi Mumbai International Airport, this 14,000 crore megaproject is slated to begin construction after the upcoming monsoon season.
While the expansion promises a smoother, more predictable commute by distributing traffic over five dedicated lanes on each side, it comes with a long-term financial trade-off for travelers. To secure funding and repay institutional loans for the 70-km widening project, authorities are planning to extend the current toll collection period on the expressway by an additional 15 years, moving the original deadline from 2045 to 2060. The massive expansion is expected to be executed in phases over the next three to five years, transforming the route into a seamless superhighway network.

A major eight-year infrastructure deadlock in Southern Pune is finally wrapping up. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has entered the final stage of laying the crucial distribution pipeline for a long-pending overhead water tank in Dhayari. Although the tank itself was constructed back in 2017 as part of the city’s Equitable Water Supply Scheme, it remained a hollow concrete shell for nearly a decade due to incomplete main lines. Once the final joints are connected to the Wadgaon Water Works, the system will begin pumping fresh water across a wide belt running from Savitri Garden to Dhayari Phata.
However, the relief is bittersweet. The neighborhood’s extreme dependence on private water tankers took a dark turn in early 2025, when parts of the Dhayari-Narhe-Khadakwasla belt witnessed an outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) , a rare neurological disorder linked heavily to contaminated groundwater. While this specific tank won't directly reach the worst-hit GBS pockets, the Union government recently sanctioned a massive ₹890-crore mega-project to scale up water purification plants and build additional networks across Pune's 34 newly merged villages to completely eradicate tanker reliance.

The state government is eyeing a radical solution to Pune's surface-level gridlock: a massive 54km underground expressway network nicknamed ‘Paatal Lok’. Designed to divert private vehicles from the city's severely constrained surface roads which make up just 9% of Pune’s total land area, the ambitious project will feature a longest continuous 14km tunnel running directly from Yerawada to Katraj.
To fast-track this alongside another proposed East-West connectivity tunnel, the Chief Minister announced plans to set up a dedicated administrative committee of experts. Tunnelling and urban planning experts note that Pune's unique basalt rock geography is structurally ideal for heavy boring, making it highly stable and cost-effective in the long run. However, environmentalists have already raised red flags, labeling the capital-intensive project a temporary fix that will simply create massive "funnel bottlenecks" where the tunnels resurface, arguing instead for a hyper-focus on expanding the existing Metro lines. The project is currently sitting at the pre-feasibility report stage awaiting a green light from the Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA).

A major multi-year logjam at one of Southern Pune’s worst traffic bottlenecks has finally been cleared. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has officially handed over the final 230 meters of land required to build the critical ramp for the long-delayed Katraj Chowk Flyover. The land parcels are being transferred to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for immediate construction.
This breakthrough links the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass seamlessly to the Katraj-Kondhwa Road, bypassing the chaotic gridlock below. Concurrently, the PMC is accelerating land acquisition to widen the notoriously narrow Katraj-Kondhwa artery all the way up to Pisoli Chowk. While the administration is confident that these tandem projects will fast-track traffic relief in the coming months, local commuters remain critical of the extreme delays pointing out that the flyover has languished for two years, while the micro-market's core road-widening project has dragged on for nearly eight years.

Tensions are rising between homeowners and the civic body in the twin cities. Cooperative housing societies across Pimpri-Chinchwad have strongly objected to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for expanding its tax net to levy property tax on open amenity spaces. Residents from prominent residential hubs, including Bhosari, Boradewadi, Moshi, Chikhali, and Pradhikaran, have labeled the decision an unjustified and hidden hike that sharply inflates their annual property tax bills.
According to representatives from the Chikhali-Moshi-Pimpri-Chinchwad Housing Societies Federation (CMPCHSF), the civic body previously restricted property tax assessments to constructed common assets like clubhouses, community halls, and auditoriums. However, this fiscal year, revised tax bills arrived with added levies on unconstructed open zones, including children's playgrounds, gardens, swimming pools, jogging tracks, and volleyball courts. Flat owners argue that treating non-commercial recreational areas as taxable built-up properties is unfair and could discourage residential complexes from maintaining green spaces in the future. While PCMC officials maintain that taxes on open amenities have existed for years based on standard property classification norms and deny any sudden rate changes, the federation is preparing to submit a formal collective complaint demanding an immediate rollback of the assessment.
