THE LEGEND OF NAVARATRI - According to the Shiva Purana, Navratri marks the period in which Goddess Durga fought with the evil demon Mahishasura for nine days and nine nights. On the tenth day Goddess Durga achieved victory over the demon and hence this day is called as "Vijayadashami" (victory on the tenth day). It is also called as Dussehra (short for Dashanan-hara i.e. "Ravana's defeat") as according to the Ramayana, Lord Ram also achieved victory over Ravana on this day.
