đ¸Would You Pay $645 for a $19.99 Shoe?
Price tag: $645
Actual cost: $19.99
Yep, you read that right.
Payless pulled off one of the most savage branding stunts ever.
They rebranded as Palessi, set up an ultra-glam pop-up store, and invited fashion influencers to shop.
The store had it allâgold mannequins, marble floors, an elite vibe.
Influencers went crazy for the shoes, dropping hundreds without hesitation.
"Itâs so elegant and sophisticated."
"You can tell itâs high-quality material."
Then came the plot twist⌠these âdesignerâ shoes were just regular Payless shoes.
The influencers were shook.
And thatâs when Payless proved a game-changing lesson:
Branding is EVERYTHING.
The product didnât change.
The quality didnât magically improve.
The only thing that changed?
The name, the price, and the experience.
And that was enough to make people believe the shoes were 1,800% more valuable.
đ¸ACTIONABLE TIPS:
So, What Can Smaller Brands Like You and Me Learn From This?
You donât need a fancy pop-up or a massive budget to make your brand feel premium. Perceived value comes from branding, not just the product. Hereâs how to elevate yours:
1ď¸âŁ Position Like a Premium Brand
People pay more for brands that look valuable. Use high-quality visuals, clear messaging, and social proof can make a $20 product feel like a $200 product.
2ď¸âŁ Create an Experience
Upgrade your website, packaging, and customer touchpoints to make every interaction polished and intentional.
3ď¸âŁ Price with Intention
Pricing shapes perception. If itâs too low, people assume itâs low quality. Not ready to raise prices? Test bundles, premium add-ons, or tiered offers to shift how people see your brand.
đ¸ So, are you branding your business like Payless⌠or Palessi?
