✶ COME TO OUR FREE WEBINAR ABOUT MATRIARCHY ✶

The word matriarchy is often surrounded by confusion, hope, projection or fantasy. For some, it evokes a reversal of domination. For others, an impossible utopia or historical myth. But what does it actually refer to?

On 25 March at 6pm GMT, researcher, author and curator Chiara Baldini will dive into the fascinating and often controversial history of the idea of matriarchy to explore how the concept has evolved—and why it still sparks such passionate debate today.

What did early theorists get right? What did they miss? What do contemporary feminist and indigenous scholars say about their work? And perhaps most importantly, what do people today imagine when they hear the word matriarchy?

Webinar: Understanding Matriarchy with Chiara Baldini
Date: Wednesday, 25 March

FUN FACT ✶ On December 6, 1273, Thomas Aquinas had an intense mystical experience during Mass, after which he refused to dictate any further text to his secretary, Reginald of Piperno. When Reginald urged him to continue his monumental work on the Summa Theologiae, Aquinas famously replied that he could write no more: "All that I have written seems to me like straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me."

There is nothing afraid in Hildegard ✶ "William James wrote that mysticism is our yes faculty, but prophecy is our saying 'no'. We need both of those energies to be fully alive and truly spiritual. Being spiritual is not just about falling in love with the world, it’s also about defending creation in the world that we love. And that is prophetic work." — Matthew Fox

✶ swa wiccan taeca∂: as the witches teach ✶

The word ‘witch’ evokes strong reactions, some shaped by a millennium of persecution, but it also resonates with much older spiritual heritages having to do with women’s wisdom and power. In fact, across European history, people regarded witches as teachers and spiritual authorities, who were inspired by reverence for earth, water and the powers of nature.

Apropos our mission to enchant the world, we have yet another free and magical webinar coming up. This time, we're in conversation with fairytale scholars about why folklore and fairytales continue to be such a compelling cultural force. And we're doing this by unearthing fairytales from around the world to investigate how the similar characters and archetypes show up in difficult cultures—and what each teaches us about the vitality of the human spirit.

In the pre-patriarchal society of Minoan Crete, the frescoes on palatial walls and communal spaces centre and celebrate animals, bare-breasted priestesses and psychedelic feasts—a far cry from the soldiers, war and pomp patriarchal societies are accustomed to. WE CHOOSE THE PRIESTESSES AND THE BLUE MONKEYS!

What can the "dirty, messy and wild" fairytales of 17th-century France teach us about self-empowerment from within the technological clutches of the 21st?

There is a forest where a white flower blooms for seven hours and then dies. How can a flower pollinate if it is alive for only seven hours? Love. The flower’s sweet smell attracts a native bat, who pollinates the flower as they eat it. The lack of nutrients in one flower spurs this bat to eat from hundreds of flowers, therefore helping more of them reproduce against the odds.

Deforestation threatens this love. A smaller forest means fewer flowers, which means fewer bats. If this relationship is severed, both species will disappear. Nature constantly reminds us that love exists beyond us. We only need to look. When our views of love are anthropocentric, they feed into the arrogance that deludes us into uprooting trees from their environments, overusing resources and polluting the seas.
