Minister of People, Social Development and Family Services, Vandana Mohit, has dismissed claims that social grants are being paid late, insisting that her ministry has met its payment obligations, and warns against what she described as deliberate misinformation.

Mohit said reports of delayed payments were false and politically motivated.

Mohit accused Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles and the People’s National Movement of promoting the claims, but maintained the ministry’s record shows otherwise.

“We have been paying grants on time,” she said.

PM SAYS SHE WILL REDUCE TRAFFIC FINES IF THERE IS A DECREASE IN ROAD DEATHS, RECKLESS DRIVING, DUI

I indicated to the media today that the ball is in the public’s court. Their behaviour will determine future changes with respect to a ban on fireworks and the revision of fines for traffic offences.

I will give the fireworks legislation a couple more months, but if there is no improvement, I will ban it outright.

Similarly, with respect to the traffic fines, if by the end of the first half of 2026 there is a decrease in road deaths, reckless driving, and drunk driving offences, I would be willing to reduce traffic fines to lower than they previously were.

From the reports I have received, compliance with the fireworks law varied considerably across communities. From my own experience over Christmas and New Year’s, I can say definitively that from my home I could hear fireworks being used outside of the permitted hours. There were also many complaints about loud music at night going into the early morning hours, which I also know to be true, as I heard music emanating from north of Philippine almost every night, sometimes up to 3 a.m.

There are some people in this country who simply cannot follow the law and have no concern for the inconvenience and harassment they impose on decent, law-abiding citizens.

The country will remain a lawless dump unless strong action is taken against these ignorant people who have no regard for their fellow citizens.

The issue is not about law enforcement; it is about a lack of civility and respect by some citizens. The police should not have to be chasing people to charge or arrest them just to get them to comply with minor laws. What example are adults who cannot follow basic rules and laws setting for their children?

My government is committed to working with law-abiding citizens to fix this country.

The lawless, entitled people simply do not care about who they kill on the roads, who they torment in their homes, or who they bully, abuse, and inconvenience day after day.

The law did not fail, the police did not fail, and good law-abiding citizens did not fail - a minority of lawless citizens failed.

Commissioner hails historic crime reduction in New Year’s message— murders fall to 367, TTPS credits intelligence-led policing and SOE operations

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) recorded significant reductions in major crimes during 2025, including a 42 per cent drop in murders, according to the Commissioner of Police in his New Year’s message to the nation.

Commissioner Allister Guevarro said murders fell from 624 in 2024 to 367 in 2025, representing 257 fewer lives lost and marking the most sustained downward trend in homicides in over a decade.

He noted that the figure closely mirrors the 352 murders recorded in 2011, one of the lowest years on record.

The murder detection rate also improved, rising from 15 per cent to 20 per cent, with 87 murder cases solved, including investigations carried over from previous years.

Violent crime declined by 15 per cent, while serious reported crimes fell by eight per cent. Larceny of motor vehicles dropped by 21 per cent, and fatal road traffic accidents decreased by 22 per cent, which the

Commissioner Guevarro attributed to improved enforcement and targeted road safety interventions.
He said these gains were achieved through precision intelligence-led policing, strengthened investigative capacity, improved inter-divisional coordination, and a renewed culture of accountability across the Service.

He highlighted that several police divisions recorded notable reductions in murders, with Port of Spain, Tobago, and North Central showing declines of between 59 and 65 per cent.

Eastern Division achieved one of the highest murder detection rates at 62 per cent, while Central, Southern, Port of Spain, and North Central Divisions recorded the largest decreases in overall serious crime.

Illegal firearms remained the most significant threat to public safety, the Commissioner said, but intensified interdiction efforts resulted in the recovery of 676 firearms in 2025—an increase over 2024.

Thousands of rounds of ammunition were seized across multiple calibres, along with large quantities of narcotics, including over three tonnes of marijuana, more than ten thousand grams of cocaine, over one thousand ecstasy pills, and multiple synthetic drugs. More than one thousand marijuana plants were also destroyed during operations.

The Commissioner pointed to the State of Emergency declared on July 18, 2025, as a key factor in accelerating crime suppression.

During the SOE period, the TTPS conducted 12,818 operations, targeted 3,763 priority offenders, carried out 84,346 searches, arrested 5,034 persons, charged 2,583 individuals, and detected 45,587 traffic offences.

He said murders declined sharply from July onward, correlating directly with these intensified enforcement efforts.

Accountability within the Service was also emphasized. The Commissioner disclosed that in 2025, 27 police officers were arrested and charged for various offences, stating that this was not a failure of the TTPS but evidence of its commitment to integrity and institutional legitimacy.

Beyond enforcement, the TTPS expanded its community-focused initiatives, including the growth of School-Oriented Policing, increased support to seniors and at-risk families, enhanced community patrols, improved customer service protocols, and expanded tactical response capabilities at the nation’s airports.

Officers also partnered with community councils, engaged youth groups, assisted during emergencies, and provided humanitarian support.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Commissioner called on citizens to remain engaged and law-abiding, stressing that public safety is strongest when built on shared responsibility.

He reaffirmed the TTPS’s commitment to integrity, professionalism, and service, and extended New Year’s greetings to the public, expressing confidence that with continued partnership, Trinidad and Tobago can remain safe, strong, and prosperous.

The project includes demolishing the damaged wall, constructing a new reinforced concrete retaining wall, and repairing the outfall drainage to improve water flow in the river channel.

Officials say the upgrades will strengthen erosion control, protect nearby properties, and improve drainage for the wider Valencia community.

The works are part of the Division’s ongoing programme to upgrade drainage infrastructure and reduce flood and erosion risks in communities nationwide.
