September is #AlopeciaAwarenessMonth but for so many of us, this experience is our actual lives…every single day.

people stopping you and asking if you’re in remission.

offering to hold the door for you with the sympathetic smile.

underhanded comments like “oh don’t worry, you can totally pull it off.”

the “wait, you’re actually really beautiful.” Why the actually?

the drunk guy at the bar who reaches over and rubs his hand on your head without asking permission.

the lady who says “have you tried a vegan diet”

the everlasting fear of anything worn on our heads flying off with a strong gust of wind…

the person who doesn’t understand your femininity, despite your makeup and large hoop earrings, and bluntly asks “WHAT ARE YOU?”

the purchase of sunscreen. A lot of sunscreen.

the stares. THE STARES. they never end.

The experience of Alopecia could never be accurately summarized in a short caption for Instagram, but this crazy experience has driven me to become so much more courageous, empathetic, kind, and loud about its effect on us all. So that these younger girls grow up, knowing it is their superpower, and nothing else. ✨
