MAMA Academy is a UK charity which has been helping save babies lives since 2012. Sadly, the UK has one of the highest stillbirth rates in the developed world with the majority of deaths potentially preventable. We empower parents with safer pregnancy information, educate healthcare professionals on stillbirth prevention methods and raise awareness of the issues around stillbirth and early infant mortality. Our midwifery resources aid consistent maternity care across the country; improving outcomes for families and their precious babies.

Today is World Day of Social Justice. In UK maternity care, inequality is not theoretical. It is measurable.
• Black women are still significantly more likely to die during pregnancy and birth.
• Women living in deprived areas face poorer outcomes.
• Barriers to language support, culturally competent care, and continuity persist.
We know this from national data. And we know that most professionals come to work every day wanting to provide safe, compassionate care.
Social justice in maternity care means:
– Listening to families who feel unheard
– Challenging bias, conscious and unconscious
– Providing interpreters without hesitation
– Designing services that reach those least likely to access them
– Using data to drive change, not defend the status quo
Equity is not about giving more to some. It is about removing preventable harm.
At MAMA Academy, we believe safer pregnancy must be safer for everyone.
If you work in maternity, today is a reminder that small changes in language, access, and advocacy can alter outcomes.

The UK government has taken an important step forward by supporting the introduction of miscarriage bereavement leave. Currently, parental bereavement leave applies only after 24 weeks of pregnancy, but there is now strong support to extend this right to those experiencing pregnancy loss before this time.
Thanks to powerful advocacy from Labour MP Sarah Owen and dedicated campaigning by the Miscarriage Association, pregnancy loss is being officially recognised in law as a legitimate bereavement deserving of specific support.
Although initially proposed as unpaid leave, this marks significant progress in workers’ rights and validates the grief experienced by thousands every year.
Swipe through to learn more about the proposed changes and ongoing efforts to strengthen workers' rights across the UK.

Big news from Broomfield Hospital! Thanks to a crucial grant from Mid & South Essex Hospitals Charity, a brand-new pilot is helping reduce postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) for mums after birth. This life-saving initiative uses a fast-acting medication called Fibrinogen to control excessive bleeding—offering quicker treatment, fewer complications, and less separation time from newborns.
Why it matters:
• Over 50,000 women in the UK experience PPH every year.
• Fibrinogen works faster than traditional transfusions and has fewer side effects.
• More time for mums to focus on bonding and recovery.
We’re excited to see how this can improve care at Broomfield—and potentially set a new standard for mums across the country.
Want to learn more about PPH, safer pregnancy tips, and this groundbreaking pilot? Visit our website for the full article, plus loads of helpful advice for expecting and new parents.
Every mother deserves the best possible start to motherhood—and together, we’re making it happen.
