City Girl With Country Roots

Hello, and Welcome to City Girl With Country Roots!

Come along with me, my family, my dogs, & chickens and see how you can Garden/Farm in an urban/city setting! You don't need a lot of land to have a garden, a farm, or a homestead. All you need is patience, a touch of crazy, and a willingness to enjoy life adventures!

Though life is crazy, adventurous, and sometimes a mystery, for me, farming, gardening, homesteading is a great way to relax, while growing organic/natural vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruits, chickens for eggs, manure, as well as pets, & more here in Kentucky, zone 7.

Gotta Love Kentucky Weather! Sunday, December 14th was snow with a high of 15 degrees low of 7 degrees. Wednesday, Dec. 17th, sunshine, with a high of 58 degrees low of 44 degrees, and today, Dec. 18th rain with a high of 55 degrees and tonight's low of 21 degrees. We have a saying here in Kentucky, stay long enough and you can experience all 4 seasons in one day! #weather #chickens #Kentucky

My girls are still laying even in 26 degree weather. No artificial light, but plenty of love and good food. I guess it's true happy hens do lay more.

Avery is always serving face! Kinda reminds me of the TV show Different Strokes & Arnold saying "What you talking about Willis?"

This is the week to explore KY Farmer's who offer CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture).

What is CSA? Why a CSA? In plain English, a CSA is where you help support a local farmer and their dreams. When you sign up with that farm(s), your money/contributions are used to help buy seeds, fertilizer, soil amendments, season extenders, etc. In exchange, you will receive fresh & locally/state vegetables, fruits, eggs, meat, flowers, etc. from that farm, depending on what that farm offers in their CSA. It is your share of the investment in them/us.

Why a CSA? A CSA is a great way to support local (state) farmers, eat in season, freshness not shipped 1000's of miles, explore foods/vegetables that you may have never thought about trying, support the local economy, but most important of all it is an investment in yourself & health!

Be sure to check out a CSA no matter what state or country you live in. You, your family, your community, and your health are always worth the investment!

Did you know that snow is beneficial to your garden? Snow is a free fertilizer, better known as "poor man's" fertilizer. Snow brings nitrogen to the soil, moisture, activates micros, and so much more. Enjoy this free fertilizer!
