I had so much fun in State College last week talking to the Penn State football team. Having my quote painted on the wall in their training center, still to this day, is one my biggest professional honors. Stay tuned for notes, highlights, and video clips from my talk with the team!
My second book, Sustain Your Game, dropped in 2022 as a follow up to Raise Your Game (2019). If it somehow slipped by you… and you need some help managing stress, avoiding stagnation, and beating burnout… you can get a hardcopy on Amazon right now for only $12!
🚨 NEW VIDEO 🚨 What if everything you’ve been taught about success… is backward? We chase titles, money, and validation—believing it’s all about us. But the people who actually win—in business, in life, in relationships—know a deeper truth: Success isn’t about you. It’s about what you give. In this powerful video, we break down the mindset shift that separates the frustrated from the fulfilled. Whether you're building a career, a brand, or a better version of yourself—this one idea will change how you lead, how you serve, and how you live.
These two pics from April 2010, of me, my parents, and my less-than-one-month old twin sons (Luke & Jack), make me emotional. These past 15+ years have revelatory for me.
As I close in on half a century of life, I spend a lot of time in deep reflection. While I’ve certainly lived a good life so far, my journey has been riddled with numerous poor decisions, paralyzing insecurities, failed relationships, and boneheaded mistakes.
So many things haven’t turned out the way I had hoped. I’m divorced, have been through years of therapy, have been in debt, battled both anxiety and depression, experienced numerous panic attacks, anesthetized myself with alcohol, and wasn’t always emotionally present to my kids.
I’ve imprisoned myself with a scarcity mindset, exhausted myself chasing what I thought I wanted, and made several really, really dumb financial decisions.
Yet I am currently the most fulfilled, most optimistic, and most emotionally stable I have ever been.
My life today is amazing because of those mistakes and setbacks, not despite them.
The man I am today is a collage of it all: the good, the bad, and everything in between.
My flaws and shortcomings are as essential to the recipe as my strengths and superpowers.
Both my poor decisions and my brilliant ones have shaped who I am and where I stand today.
But my work isn’t done.
In fact, the work will never be done.
*This is an excerpt from the first chapter in my new book (which will drop November 1):
Next Play: How to Focus on What Matters Most and Improve Performance, Productivity, & Fulfillment
On May 28, I broke my elbow on the first day of the Coach K Fantasy Basketball Camp. One week later I had surgery to reattach my triceps tendon. I will go back to UVA Health in a month for my final check-up; to remove the cumbersome hinged brace I’ve been wearing, and will begin 4-6 weeks of PT.
I’ve given two keynotes since my injury (the first one, pictured, was 72 hours after surgery!) and have several lined up for July and August (including a HUGE event in Macau, China!).
While none of this has been convenient, ideal, or preferred… it has been an extraordinary learning experience.
I’m grateful that I realized immediately that no amount of whining, complaining, moaning, or self-pity would change my situation, so the foundation of my mindset has been ACCEPTANCE.
Check my bio for a link to 5 perspectives I’ve used to help me pass my test!
I am pumped to make my way down to the stunning Omni Amelia Island this evening to deliver a keynote tomorrow for the leadership and internal team at Southeast Toyota Dealers… as part of their annual SET Fixed Operations Summit!
I recently had my stitches removed (from elbow/triceps surgery)… and will be rockin’ a cumbersome hinge brace in lieu of this plastic brace, ace bandages, and sling! My arm is slowly but surely recovering!
I’ve had the unbelievable good fortune to meet Coach K on numerous occasions, and he has never disappointed.
I most recently saw him 3 weeks ago when I attended his Coach K Academy (Duke Basketball Fantasy Camp). I had this camp on my Bucket List for a decade and finally pulled the trigger as an early 50th birthday present to myself.
After a decade of anticipation and 6+ months of intense training and preparation… I finally made my way down to Durham.
And on the first day, I broke my elbow after taking a nasty spill in my second game.
Ugh.
Not exactly how I envisioned this experience.
But the support I received (both physical and emotional) was incredible.
Most specifically, Coach K and I had a meaningful private conversation the morning after my injury.
He then called me the day after camp ended (to check in and make sure I got home safely).
He called me again the day after my surgery (to make sure it went well).
Then he sent me this handwritten note in the mail.
I don’t say any of this to boast. I simply want to put a spotlight on what a remarkable leader he is.
He didn’t have to do any of those things.
He did them because he cares.
He did them because it was the right thing to do.
He did them because he knows that little things make a big difference.
Coach K did these acts of kindness because he is an unparalleled leader.
I’ve respected, admired, and looked up to Coach K for 25+ years (when I read his first book, ‘Leading with the Heart’) and that admiration has strengthened 100x since then…
On our last call I told him I will be back at camp – better than ever – in 2026 (to which he replied, “I know you will!”).
Here’s WHO I spoke to: I had so much fun at the Omni Amelia Island delivering a pre-lunch keynote to 150+ team members at Southeast Toyota!
Here’s WHY they are unique: Southeast Toyota is the go-between-partner and liaison between Toyota and 175+ dealerships in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. They provide cars, parts, and service and are the largest Toyota distributor in the US. They are also consistently named one of the top places to work… as they have a phenomenal culture. They are pursuing an incredibly lofty North Star of having 6K technicians, selling 1M tires, and selling $1B in parts/service (they call this goal the 6-1-1)!
Here’s a little of WHAT I shared: I shared a series of stories, stats, and strategies on how to level up personal influence/impact (and lead with excellence), how to show up consistently as your best self (prepared to make a maximum contribution), and how to build a winning team (with championship caliber culture/cohesion).
Here’s HOW I can help you: Can you think of an event, team, or organization that would benefit from my message in 2025? If so, please have them shoot me a DM to explore options on my customized keynotes, half-day interactive workshops, and full day trainings! Or nudge them to fill out this form: alansteinjr.com/contact/
I want to give a HUGE thank you to Brittanny Kreutzer and her amazing team at The Speaker Exchange Agency for their support and partnership!

This past Saturday, at the Tucson Convention Center, I had the great fortune to be a return guest on Ed Mylett’s podcast.
I was previously on his show in June of 2022… which I highly recommend you go back in the archives and watch/listen to if you missed it!
As awesome as our chat was in 2022, we topped it this past weekend and recorded some straight fire backstage at the Life Surge event!
I am thrilled with what we captured and can’t wait for you all to see/hear our conversation…
We talked Next Play…
We talked parenting…
We talked emotional regulation…
We talked elite performance separators…
Stay tuned for details…
You will NOT want to miss this one!!
