🧠 Scalp Muscles: Essential Anatomy for Clinical Practice

The primary muscle of the scalp is the occipitofrontalis, which consists of two distinct bellies connected by the epicranial aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica).

▪️ Frontal belly (frontalis) – elevates the eyebrows and produces horizontal forehead wrinkles.

▪️ Occipital belly (occipitalis) – retracts the scalp and supports the actions of the frontal belly.

📚 Why is this important?

A sound understanding of scalp anatomy is crucial for surgical procedures, trauma assessment, administration of local anaesthesia, and recognising facial nerve pathology. Knowledge of these anatomical relationships underpins safe and effective clinical practice across dentistry, medicine, and allied healthcare professions.

Continuous revision of anatomical fundamentals remains essential throughout one’s clinical career.
