Hummingbird Acres

When I first started raised bed gardening, I thought you could grow anything in them.
So I followed all the lists.

And some of it completely failed.
Not because I didn’t try hard enough — but because not everything belongs in a raised bed when you're brand new.

The truth is, some plants are confidence builders for beginners:
🌿 Leafy greens
🌿 Herbs
🍅 Tomatoes
🌶 Peppers

Start with the plants that are most likely to succeed.
I just shared a new video explaining what to plant in raised beds (and what to skip).

🌱 The reason most people never start a garden
They watch the videos.
They read the books.
They save the Pinterest boards.

But they never actually plant anything.
Why?
Because they’re afraid of doing it wrong.

But here’s the truth every gardener learns:
You’ll plant things too early.
You’ll plant things too late.
You’ll forget to water something.

And that’s not failure.
That’s how you learn.
The garden teaches by doing — not researching.

🎧 I shared more about this in this week’s episode of Homestead Heart to Heart.

👇 FEELING BEHIND AGAIN?

It’s mid-season and your garden still isn’t what you hoped it would be…
Everyone online is harvesting baskets of produce, and you're over here staring at half-filled beds, wondering if it’s even worth it to keep going.

But let me tell you something I’ve had to remind myself—again and again:
Your garden isn’t late.Your life isn’t behind. You’re right on time for your season.
This year, we were still building the garden when most people were already planting.Every time I scrolled Instagram, I felt the knot of “too late” settle in my chest.

But here’s what happened instead:
1️⃣ We planted anyway.
2️⃣ We worked in pockets of time—not full weekends.
3️⃣ We gave ourselves grace over guilt.

And now? The beds are filling. The cucumbers are coming in hot. The kids are asking to help. No, it doesn’t look like the dream garden I sketched out in January—but it feels like home.

So if you’re looking around and thinking, “I’m too late,” please hear this:
🌱 There’s still time.
🌱 Every seed holds potential.
🌱 The only “rule” is to start when you can.

Whether you’ve got a patio, backyard, or just a few containers—you’re allowed to begin now.
