World Anemia Awareness

March 14th, 2025 the World Health Organization (WHO) released the "Guidance on implementing patient blood management (PBM) to improve global blood health status"

❓ What does it mean for you and me?

✅ Better, safer care surrounding childbirth, cancer treatment, and surgery. By improving blood health, PBM helps prevent complications and speeds up recovery.

❓ Why is this different?

✅ This new guidance introduces evidence-based practices that empower healthcare providers to optimize blood management, reducing unnecessary risks and improving patient outcomes. It’s a global step towards making care safer and more effective.

❓ What has to happen?

✅ The WHO’s new guidance provides ministries of health, hospitals, and healthcare professionals with a clear framework for implementing PBM policies effectively at national and institutional levels.

❓ How does anemia and iron deficiency fit in?

✅ Anemia and iron deficiency play a big role in our overall blood health. By managing these conditions through PBM, we can prevent complications, recover more quickly, and improve our overall health and well-being.

❓ What should I do about it?

✅ Take a moment to ask your doctor about your blood health. Whether you're facing surgery, pregnancy, or cancer treatment, knowing they’re following the latest WHO guidance on PBM ensures you’re getting the best care possible.
