ECMWF vs ECMWF AI – Major Model Disagreement
As of the latest forecasts, the traditional ECMWF model continues to indicate the development of a powerful cyclone over the Bay of Bengal around 3 - 6 June.
However, ECMWF AI (AIFS) presents a very different scenario. Both the AI deterministic run and the AI ensemble forecasts show little to no support for cyclone formation during the same period.
This is not the first time such a disagreement has occurred. In several recent cases, ECMWF suggested significant tropical development over Arabian sea while ECMWF AI remained unconvinced, and the expected systems either weakened substantially or failed to form altogether.
At the moment, there is considerable uncertainty regarding cyclone formation in the Bay of Bengal. Given the current model disagreement, it remains possible that no significant system develops despite the strong signal shown by ECMWF.
A clearer picture should emerge within the next 48 hours as newer model runs become available and forecast consistency improves.
