Sustainable Water Cremation Legalised in Scotland
Scotland became the first UK country to legalise water cremation (aquamation/alkaline hydrolysis) offering families a more sustainable alternative to traditional burial or cremation.
Rather than burning, the process uses heated water and potassium hydroxide to break down soft tissue, leaving bones to be pulverised into powder.
Aquamation uses about 1/7th the energy and emits 7 times less CO₂ than traditional cremation.
It’s expected to commence in summer, offering a more sustainable funerary option.
