The second title was my film “Pinocchio”. That was first out in 1985, which I’ve already gone over that release of the film. The next release was 1993, which I also already discussed too. However, there were a few things I missed about that release. For one thing, the packaging was different from its former release and all other titles of the series too for that matter. Like “Fantasia”, the diamond doesn’t appear anywhere on here nor does the heading of “Walt Disney’s Classic” do either. It’s like it was built up as a special release, even though it was already on VHS before. Why this was done, we’ll never know. Also worth noting’s the page flap curl. This one’s different from the one on the original release and all the titles from the 80’s too. This one’s different from them however because it says “Restored to its Original Brilliance” because it was derived from the reissue in the year prior. Needless to say, this release was the first time that flap in general that flap was seen since “Bambi” in 1989. Therefore, there’s quite a lot to absorb about this cover of the film with how they went out on it

On another note for “Robin Hood”, another difference with the original 1984 release and rerelease from 1991 is with one tiny detail. On the original 1984 release, it had “The Original Animated Classics” flap on the bottom right corner that was a staple of all releases in the 80’s. For the 1991 release, they didn’t bring it back. They modified the front cover of the original release, but that was all they did. It’s true that the 1991 reissues of “Dumbo” and “The Sword in the Stone” still had that flap on the corner of their releases, but that’s because they still used their covers from 1989 at that point, so those might not count. Same deal with the 1991 reissue of “Alice in Wonderland” too, even with the slight modification it got then. As you can see, this is another example of how this reissue in 1991 took a different path coming to be than the other three did. On one last note of this title, there's still one more thing to ponder about it. It did start the series itself off in 1984 as a test of the waters title. What might've happened if something else had started the series off whether it was something like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" or even "The Rescuers"? When would we have seen this film on VHS? Well, that depends on when the next reissue to theaters may have occured. In the real timeline, the film had only reissue in 1982 and then came to VHS two years after that. But, if wasn't on VHS at that time, then there very well would've been another one later on in time. One possibility would be getting reissued in 1988 for its 15th anniversary and premiering on VHS in 1989. Another possibility is that the 1991 release might've been its first release on VHS, but a reissue would've happened in 1990 in order to build it up in that regard. One other possibility would've been instead of having a VHS release in 1991, the reissue in theaters might've been then instead, which would've brought it on VHS 1992 the same year the second version of the film was out ironically. The last possibility would be having the reissue in 1993 for its 20th anniversary and then following up on VHS in 1994 when the series ended. Another thread of irony there where it could've ended the series when it actually started it instead. Four possibilites on what could've been, but as I've said before many times when discussing alternate timelines on here, we can only speculate on what could've been. Well, considering it’s the first title of the series, it’s no wonder why it stands out above the rest

But, one more version was made on October 1st, 1993 to promote “Aladdin” that time. In this version, there wasn’t that much different about it, except for one thing. The full 1988 WDC logo is present on this version. No one knows why this change was done, but maybe they felt the need to update it. Just a guess, but as a result, this is another one that has had all three variants of the Sorcerer Mickey Classics logos. Well, only on a technicality because the 1992 logo on the U.K release wasn’t shown in its full form before the film. It was only the 1988 and 1989 logos shown in full form in front of the film. So, this one counts technically, but the story with this one’s still different from the likes of “101 Dalmatians” and “The Great Mouse Detective”. However, it’s also the only one to have all four WDC logos with it being the first title and all, therefore the film’s still in a monopoly of its own for that reason. Thus, when it comes to this film, it always sticks out as the oddity since uncommon events ended up happening with this title. But, that’s what makes the history of this title so interesting

However, as well known as the 1991 version is, it wasn’t the only version made though. While we know that version the best out of all them, they had made others versions too. The film became a general release starting with this release of the film, and as such, change became inedible. Starting on April 10th, 1992 to promote “101 Dalmatians”, the next version was made without previews. It was also made to test out the green FBI screens which premiered earlier in the year, so this version occurred as the equivalent of testing a guinea pig for an experiment. What’s also interesting’s that they kept the cut short version of the 1989 logo intact from the previous version instead of upgrading to the full version like the laserdisc did. Rather bizarre, but interesting to say the least about this version of the film

Now back to the VHS, the 1991 version’s the most well known version since that was what us kids growing in the 90’s introduction to the film. I especially can vouch for it since it’s from the best damn year ever, my year of birth. That’s why it’s worth nothing that like all the other 1991 tapes I went over back in November, this was another example of a tape going from vertical white label to horizontal silk screen. This was the only former title of the series to have it because the 1991 reissues of “Dumbo”, “The Sword in the Stone”, and “Alice in Wonderland” only had a single version made with the silk screen labels. This one followed the suit that all the new titles had that year, which is why else this reissue stood out that year too

Back to the American release, now as I mentioned way back in the beginning when this film started our tribute in the summer, the film had a second release in the series on July 12th, 1991. The VHS contained a cut-short variant of the 1989 WDC logo that was exclusive to that release only. However, the regular full version of the 1989 WDC logo has appeared in front of the film itself one time before. That was right here on the laserdisc of the film from that year too

That’s all for that title, but the next one’s going to be a huge one since it covers one of the BEST films of all time. BUT, before we cover that film, we got some more bonus miscellaneous to go right through. Not only that, but I’m also going to play a little catchup on facts for titles that I missed. Of course, the first one to play catchup with is naturally the first title in the whole series “Robin Hood”. In the U.K, the film had its next release in fall 1992, a year after us Americans got our second release of the film. This release is interesting because the 1992 distorted WDC logo just debuted on the previous title talked about “The Rescuers”, and lo and behold, here it is on a tape outside of our own country. The 1989 WDC logo wasn’t the only one to appear outside of our country, the 1992 logo did too. The logo appears here, but not in its full proper form though. It’s seen in a short edited version preceding a trailer of “The Great Mouse Detective”, which was known in the U.K as “Basil the Great Mouse Detective”, as I had mentioned when talking about that film a little while ago. It’s not the only one, as other 1992 U.K tapes have this too, but we’ll get to those after we play our game of catchup. But, this kills two birds with one stone because not only am I playing a little catchup with this fact, I’m also showing an appearance of the 1992 logo outside of our country too. This is something you’ll see quite a few more times as you’ll see

But, as interesting as those are, the demo VHS is another oddball too. The 1988 WDC logo appears here too. Of course, that’s not the oddest thing about this tape. It’s rather the marketing on this tape that makes this strange. As mentioned before, this was weirdly out after the sequel, and the marketing tried to build it up as if were a follow up to that film despite the fact we can clearly tell by the titles which one was out first. You could say that this was a rather odd strange time for the company for they how they chose to release their films at the time, but you can judge from yourself on how this tape plays out. That’s the tale with this title. The circumstances for how it came out were most unusual with how it came out after the sequel. We can debate what could’ve happened if it were out before the sequel or even if it hadn’t existed, but the release itself is still historic for new staples introduced and having the most appearances of one of the other WDC logos too. That all the while makes this title one of the more fascinating titles in the series to look at as such.

Now, as interesting as this all is, the laserdisc’s a different story. Well actually, the next three versions are because the 1988 WDC logo appears on all of them. Kind of ironic because while the normal official version was the first one to introduce the final variant of the logo, all other versions had the first version of the logo instead. The laserdisc was one version it appeared on
