Been studying the temple lately in the Old Testament.
Interesting thing to note is that the “alter” literally means to slaughter. What people don’t get is that it means to slaughter YOUR FLESH- meaning death to YOURSELF. Not animal sacrifices. In fact, God of the Old Testament never demanded animal sacrifices (Her 7:22-23, spa 40:6, Hosea 6:6, Amos 5:21-23).
Though people want the benefits of God, serving comes first. To serve, there must be a death to self.
Exodus 40:29 writes “He put the alter of burnt offering BY THE DOOR of the tabernacle” - Remember Christ is the DOOR (John 10:9) it is through him all men must enter to approach Yahweh if they desire to worship God. There is a deliberate association with the door and the altar.
