Joe DiMaggio: From American Myth to Italian Roots
Joe DiMaggio is not just a baseball legend, but also a symbol of the bond between Italy and the United States.
Son of Sicilian immigrants, he carried with him the values, sacrifices, and dreams of his homeland. After an extraordinary career with the New York Yankees, DiMaggio remained connected to his roots: his story is still celebrated today in Isola delle Femmine, where a House Museum tells of his life and his family's journey.
The myth of Joe lives on through sports, music (remembered in "Mrs. Robinson"), and pop culture.
Have you ever been to Isola delle Femmine or visited places linked to great Italian icons?

The Sicilian Roots of Joe DiMaggio
Did you know that the legendary Joe DiMaggio, an icon of American baseball, has deep roots in Sicily?
His parents left Isola delle Femmine, seeking fortune in California.
Joe was born in Martinez in 1914, but he never forgot his origins: his story is that of many Italians who brought talent and passion overseas.
DiMaggio made sports history with a 56-game hitting streak, 9 World Series wins, and a place in the Hall of Fame.
This week, we explore his roots, between the sea, legends, and dreams of redemption.

Isola delle Femmine: Where Myth Meets Reality
Ever heard of Isola delle Femmine? This small seaside village near Palermo is shrouded in legends and mysteries.
Some say the name comes from an ancient female prison, others tell of thirteen Saracen maidens exiled here, or a rebellious woman who chose the island to escape a forced destiny. In reality, the name seems to derive from "Insula Fimi," linked to Euphemius, a Byzantine rebel from the 9th century.
Today, Isola delle Femmine is famous for its beaches, ancient tower, and its history of emigration: from here, hundreds of families left for America, bringing with them Sicilian dreams and traditions.

Dean Martin: The 'Latin Lover' Who Conquered Hollywood (and Never Forgot His Italian Roots)
Dean Martin—born Dino Paul Crocetti—was more than just a Hollywood “Latin lover.” His story is deeply tied to his Italian heritage.
His father, Gaetano Crocetti, came from Montesilvano, Abruzzo, while his mother, Angela Barra, was of Neapolitan and Sicilian descent.
The Crocetti family kept their Italian identity alive in Ohio: Dean spoke only Italian until he started school, and he grew up listening to Italian folk songs and family stories from the old country.
Despite his fame in America, Dean Martin never forgot where he came from. His smooth style, love for Italian music, and even his sense of humor were shaped by his roots.
Today, both in Italy and among Italian-Americans, he’s remembered as a bridge between two worlds—a symbol of how Italian culture left its mark on American entertainment.
What do you think: did Dean Martin’s Italian background make him more charming, or was it just a Hollywood stereotype?

Montesilvano Celebrates Dean Martin: Why a Square for a US Icon?
Did you know that in Montesilvano, a coastal town in Abruzzo, there’s a square dedicated to Dean Martin? But what’s the real story behind this tribute?
Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio, but his father, Gaetano Crocetti, was born and raised right here in Montesilvano before emigrating to the US. The Crocetti family spoke only Italian at home, and young Dean grew up surrounded by Italian traditions, food, and music.
Montesilvano honors Dean Martin not just as a Hollywood legend, but as a symbol of the millions of Italians who left their homeland and made their mark abroad. The square—and the nearby Pala Dean Martin—are reminders of the deep connection between Italy and its diaspora, and of how Italian roots can shape global icons.
Have you ever visited Montesilvano or seen other Italian towns celebrating American stars with Italian heritage?
