Los Ángeles lleva grabada en mi corazón. Esta ciudad, su gente y los extraordinarios músicos de la ‪@laphil‬ han marcado mi crecimiento como artista y han compartido este capítulo tan profundo de mi vida. Juntos, hemos creado algo que se siente maravillosamente vivo. Pienso en las noches en el ‪@HollywoodBowlOfficial‬, bajo las estrellas, cuando la música parece flotar hacia el cielo y pertenecer a todos, y en YOLA, donde he visto cómo la música puede abrir puertas y transformar una vida.

Estas experiencias me han cambiado para siempre, y miro hacia el futuro con profunda gratitud y amor. Es un honor para mí continuar este viaje en mis dos nuevas funciones, como Laureado Artístico y Cultural de la Filarmónica de Los Ángeles, y Director Fundador y Director Laureado de YOLA, para seguir soñando, creando y sirviendo a esta maravillosa ciudad y a sus comunidades.

Los Angeles is written into my heart. This city, its people, and the extraordinary musicians of the LA Phil have shaped my growth as an artist and shared this profound chapter of my life. Together, we have created something that feels so beautifully alive. I think of the nights at the Hollywood Bowl, under the stars, when music seems to float into the sky and belong to everyone, and of YOLA, where I have seen how music can open doors and transform a life.

These experiences have changed me forever, and I look forward to the future with deep gratitude and love. I am honored to continue this journey in my two new roles, as Artistic and Cultural Laureate of the LA Phil, and Founding Director and Conductor Laureate of YOLA — to keep dreaming, creating, and serving this wonderful city and its communities.

And to the incredible musicians of the LA Phil: thank you with all my heart. It has been a true privilege to build a singular and extraordinary sound together with you, and our unforgettable music-making will always be a part of me. ❤️

Fue dificilísimo escoger solo ocho piezas musicales para llevarme a una isla desierta, pero gracias a Desert Island Discs de BBC Radio 4, tuve la linda oportunidad de pensar en la música que ha marcado cada etapa de mi vida—no solo como director o músico, sino como persona. Estas canciones me han acompañado desde mi infancia en Barquisimeto, pasando por mis años en El Sistema, hasta hoy… representan a mis mentores, mi familia, mis sueños… y me hace muy feliz poder compartirlas con ustedes.

Además, el momento no podría ser mejor: estoy por volver al Reino Unido con mi querida Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar—vamos a abrir diez conciertos históricos con entradas agotadas junto a Coldplay en el estadio de Wembley, y también regresamos por fin al Royal Festival Hall del Southbank Centre, el 28 de agosto, después de casi diez años.

It was impossible to choose only eight pieces of music to take on a desert island, but for BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, I had the beautiful opportunity to reflect on the music that has shaped every part of my life—not just as a conductor or musician, but as a human being. Thiese pieces have been with me from my childhood in Barquisimeto, to my years with El Sistema, to the present day... they represent my mentors, my family, my dreams... and I’m so happy to share them with you.

The timing also could not be more perfect, I prepare to return to the UK with my beloved Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra—opening ten historic, sold-out shows with Coldplay at Wembley Stadium, and making our long-awaited return to Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall for the first time in nearly a decade on August 28.
