Probably only interesting to me, but I'm going to post some of my favorite AI songs I've created and why I like them.
I've Got To Get Back To You – I love the guitar strumming at the start; it's like an engine coming to life. The synth ambience is great too. Since the '80s, songs like this have always had a special place in my heart. Rick Springfield's Don't Walk Away is a good example—the opening is just magic. I've always been trying to capture something close to that vibe.
In The Darkness I Only See You – If you were a teen in the '80s, Phil Collins was amazing. Songs like In The Air Tonight and Mama are still fantastic. With this AI song, I wanted to get close to that feeling. It's also part of a story that's been in the back of my mind: a retired government agent in a very dark place after his wife has been killed.
We Belong To The Night – I've always loved Laura Branigan. I still remember the first time I heard Gloria and exactly where I was. Self Control has always been my favorite song of hers, though I know RAF recorded the original version. This song was my attempt to get close to that vibe. Too bad Suno was harder to steer back then, because I would have liked more of those guitar parts near the beginning, a bit more later, then a lot more, and finally a full-blown guitar ending that fades into silence.
Can't Get Enough Of What You've Got – Another one of those songs where the synth vibe at the start just feels right. The song changes direction once the vocals come in. The lyrics are still great, but I kind of wish the music had stayed closer to that opening sound.
I'm Still Reaching For You – A pretty good song. It feels like something Van Halen might have made in the early '90s. The story is about a guy stranded in space, trying to get back to the woman he loves, with no way for her to know he's still trying. It could also be interpreted as death—that's one of the reasons I like it. When I listen to it, I can see both meanings.
Journey Of Ra – I've done quite a few 1980s British metal songs, and I think they're all pretty solid. This one is special because it explores Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife, specifically the Pharaoh's journey after death. I'm still not entirely sure I understand all the mythology. Does the Pharaoh become Ra, or does he join Ra on his daily journey?
Life Keeps Slipping Away – Probably more relatable to people who are older and can look back and feel that some things were better in the past. This one has strong John Mellencamp vibes because I loved his music in the '80s. The lyrics are partly based on how I feel, partly about not getting the girl I wanted, and partly about wanting to go back. Then again, a lot of people probably feel that way, so I tried to put those feelings into words.
My Mannequin Queen – This was supposed to be kind of an oddball song about a guy in love with a mannequin, but somehow the lyrics, the music, and even the thumbnail all clicked together. I'm actually disappointed it hasn't done better, but I guess a lot of people see the subject matter and think, "Nah, not for me." Still, I'm very proud of how this song turned out.
Hold On, Can You Make It To The Dawn – This is basically my Thriller wannabe without trying to outright copy Thriller. It has a spooky nighttime vibe and leaves a lot up to the listener's imagination. I never specify what's out there, so it can be whatever you think is chasing her. The whole thing feels like an '80s movie to me.
We've Got The Night – Yet another song built around that 1980s synth sound I love. I was a huge fan of the 1980s Beauty and the Beast series with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, so combining that atmosphere with synth-heavy music just felt natural.
How I Write Songs
Usually, I get an idea, then I chat with ChatGPT about it. I explain the story arc, the themes I want, and what I want to happen in the song. Then we write it out together. After that, I go through the lyrics and smooth out anything that isn't working.
I've abandoned plenty of songs because I couldn't get the music and lyrics to click together. Sometimes it's magic and everything works right away. Other times, it takes forever. Ghost In The Machine burned through about 2,000 credits before I finally got the music right, and then suddenly everything fell into place.
When I call something "low-effort," it usually means I'm giving ChatGPT a vibe, checking that the lyrics flow well, getting a Suno prompt for the style I'm aiming for, and seeing what happens. If it works, great—low-effort AI slop.
If I really care about a song, I put a lot more into it. Life Keeps Slipping Away, for example, had a lot of genuine feeling behind it, and hardly anybody clicked on it. 😛
Oh well. Expect nothing from anyone, and you're never disappointed.

If anyone is interested in some free reading, I've made all 12 of my 10,000-word novelettes free to download on Amazon for the next 4 days.
The collection includes 3 standalone stories and 3 trilogies, with genres ranging from Westerns and Cyberpunk to time-travel adventures about a genius inventor building a time machine, and even a romance about a woman who falls in love with a vampire in 1980s Manhattan.
So far, the most popular downloads have been my Ben Masters Western trilogy, which follows a famous gunfighter living through the closing days of the American frontier.
These are my 2017-era novelettes, written years before my two most recent novels. They represent some of my earlier work and give a glimpse into my development as a writer over the years.
