To this day, historians still do not know with certainty who these people truly were or exactly where they came from. The strongest academic theories suggest that they were not a single nation, but rather a coalition of different warrior tribes, displaced coastal populations, mercenaries, and migrating groups. Many theories connect them to the Aegean world, the Mycenaean Greek civilization, Anatolia (modern Turkey), Cyprus, and various Mediterranean islands. During the final centuries of the Bronze Age, severe droughts, climate change, economic collapse, trade disruption, internal rebellions, and wars destabilized the entire region. In this chaotic environment, large migrations began, and these maritime groups likely emerged from that wider crisis.
An important point is that modern internet narratives often portray the Sea Peoples as mysterious invaders who suddenly emerged from the sea and destroyed entire civilizations overnight. The actual historical picture is far more complex. Most historians today believe the Sea Peoples were only one factor among many behind the collapse of Bronze Age civilizations. Droughts, economic breakdown, collapsing trade networks, earthquakes, political instability, and mass migrations all played major roles.
