When you're supposed to be guarding the herd... but the nap hits different.
Trump our herd bull was caught dozing off ! But bison rarely sleep deeply for long stretches. instead they take multiple short naps throughout the day and night, often lasting for a few minutes at a time.
While trump our main herd bull was snoozing, some other bison are alert and watching the herd for predators like a security team.

Why do Bison roll around in dirt?
It's a behavior called wallowing and they do it for several reasons ! here are a few!
1. Pest control - The dust helps suffocate and remove parasites like ticks, lice, and flies
2. Skin Care - Wallowing helps them shed old fur during their seasonal molt
3. Cooling Off - Dirt can feel cooler than the air, especially on these hot days.
4. Marking Territory - Bulls like Maui and Trump, our herd bulls especially like to wallow to leave scent and pheromones during mating season.
5. Play and comfort - Sometimes they just enjoy it ! It's a natural and instinctive behavior.

Planting on a berm wall garden !
This method is new to us but it has been a huge improvement in our garden !
Our orchard and garden had a hard time in clay along with always having to much water !
So this method uses a raised mounds of soil to help with drainage, protect the roots, and make harvesting easier. It's a great way to grow in areas with heavy rain and clay soil !
Berm gardens create microclimates that warm up faster in spring, helping seeds sprout sooner and crops grow stronger !
Have you tried berm gardening? Would love to hear what your growing this summer leading into the fall !

White Bison Ranch
Baby Bison are called " Red Dog's" because of their reddish-orange fur when they're born.
This nickname comes from ranchers and wildlife watchers who notice that the caves stand out sharply from the darker brown adults in the herd.
Color - The fur of a newborn bison is a rusty red or orange color, which starts to turn brown after a few months.
"Dog" part - It's a colloquial, affectionate term used in ranching and prairie culture similar to how " Cow Dogs" are called regardless of breed.
This phase typically last for the first 2-3 months of life before they begin to molt and take on the dark, shaggy coat of a adult bison.
They're not only cute but they're also a sign of new life of the plains which always brings excitement to the herd and people that watch them.

White Bison Ranch
Rare Appearance: White bison are very rare, and seeing a white bison calf is even more extraordinary. The white coloration is caused by a genetic mutation called leucism, which results in a loss of pigmentation.
Cultural Significance: In many Native American cultures, the white bison is considered a sacred symbol of hope, renewal, and spiritual significance. They are often seen as a sign of good fortune and a spiritual messenger.
Color Variations: While most bison are dark brown, white bison are not albino. They have pigmented eyes and hooves, and their white coat persists into adulthood, though it is less common for the white coloration to be permanent in all cases.
Gentle Giants: Despite their large size, baby white bison are playful, curious, and social animals. They often stay close to their mothers and herd members for protection and learning.
Conservation: White bison are considered sacred and are often protected and preserved in certain reserves and cultural sites, as they hold a special spiritual significance and are symbols of cultural heritage.
