Out in Central Australia, “whirly winds” are part of ancient folklore — mini tornados that sweep up sand and leaves, turn the sky red, and scatter seeds that regenerate bush foods. Raelene Williams’ “Walpa Pukla (Whirly Winds)” tells of two powerful winds that tore through camps and later transformed into towering ghost gum trees that still stand today.

There’s something poetic about that kind of power — wild, destructive, and somehow still life-giving.

When I’m flying between shows I catch myself looking out the window, talking to God, dreaming, or even reminiscing. “Somewhere Over Laredo” tells a story that speaks to that.
